You might like to consider that when Jesus engineered/constructed his story of the prodigal son he was telling us about the heart of the Father.....and this was some time before Christians arrived on the scene.

I also think the point of the story is actually the heart of the son that stayed.
Yes, we "prodigals" needed to know that our Father still loved us, but ...
... the story was for those that "thanked God they were not like those Tax Collectors and Prodigal Sons".
