Does this verse mean that even if you give it your all, you STILL may not be able to make it to heaven? This is terrifying . What to do then? Any other thoughts on this verse?

Hi, first I've read you here. Welcome. :)

Don't be afraid. Just remember when reading a verse in scripture to read and consider the context.

I love this Bible study site. See if this helps your understanding.

It means men will look in all the wrong places; it means that the promptings of the Holy Spirit will be ignored in favour of preconceptions; it means pride drives the person.

Trying to breath air in space where there is none ensures death.

No, it doesn't. As Blessed Peace said, you have to read it in context. Look on to the next sentence (verses should never be read or quoted in isolation). Those who won't be allowed in are those who leave it too late - those who "put off" committing themselves to Jesus.
The door of opportunity won't be open for ever; and when God decides to close it, there will be no second chance. (Think of God closing the door into Noah's Ark when the Flood came) They will be shut out – not because they had insufficient information, or "didn't try hard enough", but because they didn't take the opportunity to enter the Kingdom when it was offered to them.
