Yes, it is a sidebar issue
Christ was one to go off-topic on occasion. Take for example the incident at
Mark 2:3-12. The palsy man's friends wanted to talk with Jesus about
getting him healed; but how did Jesus respond? He ignored their concerns
and got into a sidebar with the scribes. Nobody seems think the lesser of
him for that, but on a modern internet forum, Jesus would be lectured; not
to mention considered rude and disruptive.

But as I said in post #11, the Lord was micromanaged by a higher power.
His master was alert to something going on in that house that was far more
important to address than the palsy man's health; and so that's where He
chose to direct His servant's attention. However, God didn't completely
side-track the palsy man, but utilized the man's cure to validate Christ's

authority.

†. John 5:36 . . The witness which I have is greater than that of John; for
the works which the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that
I do, bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me.

That would be a good question for another thread, what constitutes an effective, edifying Bible study group. The group described in this OP seems to be just spinning their wheels. It's a point that needs to be made even if it seems off topic.
Agreed...start another topic if you wish
