I think the 1st 5 commandments are critical in keeping us under religious authority so that we maintain a proper ethic or moral code. I find it interesting that government and the priesthood are not listed in the section I view as "religious authority." That's because, in my view, both government and the priesthood can become a false god or an idol. The true authority is always God, no matter who His representatives are.
I also find it interesting the parents are included in this category. They are indeed importnat representatives of religious authority, and not to be rejected as "false gods" or "idols." They may not always have to be obeyed, such as when children grow up into adulthood. But they should always be honored for their commitment to raising their children, if indeed they have done so.
Our Western socities are losing their faith in God as the supreme religious authority and are turning to false gods and false representations of Him. And poor priests are speaking on God's behalf "in vain," not properly representing in their teaching or in their lives the complete truth about God. No wonder we are failing as a society, becoming in effect lawless peoples.
The last 5 commandments are really the social order that arises when we make the true God our religious authority. It is not just a curtailment of aberrant social behavior, but much more, a putting on of a proper religious attitude towards others. It is "loving our neighbor as ourself."
