The false belief that on the day of Christ's future 2nd coming, all the wicked are then destroyed and we go into God's new heavens and a new earth time is a doctrine of men called Amillennialism. It is not a written Bible doctrine. Christ will reign over the unsaved and wicked for a period of a "thousand years" starting on the day of His future return, as written in Revelation 20, and originally prophesied in Psalms 2.

I beleive Peter got it correct.

Cause Psalm 2:9 says like this, rod is capital punishement, they are crushed and broken into pieces, something that would be understood by the people of the time, as a weapon. Back then combatants would smash in people's skulls with clubs, they still do today.

"You shall [h]break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

Nothing here implies temporary punishment.
But it does imply dying.

Similar thing is breaking necks without remedy
  • Proverbs 29:1: "He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy."(NKJV)
    • This directly mirrors my phrasing, combining a hardened neck with sudden destruction beyond remedy.
  • Proverbs 6:15: "Therefore his calamity shall come suddenly; Suddenly he shall be broken without remedy."
  • 2 Chronicles 36:16: "But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against His people, till there was no remedy."
  • Jeremiah 19:11: "Even so I will break this people and this city, as one breaks a potter's vessel, which cannot be made whole again..."

In Psalm 2:9, divine punishment is portrayed not merely as passive judgment, but as the total, irreversible execution of justice against those who persistently resist God’s sovereignty.

Key Themes of Judgment in Psalm 2:9

  • Sovereign Execution: The phrase "break them with a rod of iron" depicts unyielding, absolute authority. An iron rod (or scepter) signifies a power against which no human strength or rebellion can stand.
  • Complete Destruction of the Wicked: The metaphor "dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel" highlights the utter fragility of wicked rulers and nations when confronted by divine judgment. A shattered clay pot cannot be repaired or pieced back together; the destruction is total and final.
  • Warning to Earthly Authorities: The psalm frames this violent imagery as a sobering warning to the kings and judges of the earth (verses 10–12) to submit to God's anointed King before His wrath is fully kindled.
Connection to God’s Appointed Day of Judgment

This theme of absolute, righteous judgment carried out by God’s ordained King aligns directly with the broader biblical message of ultimate accountability. In Acts 17:31, Paul declares that God "has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained," confirming that the authority to judge and break rebellious power rests in Jesus Christ, verified through His resurrection.

In the New Testament, this OT imagery culminates in the Book of Revelation (such as Revelation 2:27 and 19:15), where Christ’s return to crush evil and execute final judgment on the wicked fulfills the promise of the iron rod.
