The Bible says that we should be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19).
A lot of us have watched comedies or seen comics where they show someone talking and talking and talking whilst their listener keeps quiet without saying a word – and then the talker goes home thinking that they just had a wonderful conversation and got great advice!
But as children of God, we want our speech to be pleasing to Jesus so that we obey the scripture verse that says “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt” (Col 4:6) and to remember that "for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment" (Matt 12:36)
How do we obey this when the Bible also says that “no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.“? (James 3:8-9)
This almost sounds like a trick question because how do we control what we say if we can't tame our tongue? The Name of Jesus Christ, which is all powerful, and which every knee will bow at (Phil 2:10), can be used to tame our tongues. We can thus pray:
“In the Name of Jesus Christ, I command my tongue to only speak things that are with grace and seasoned with salt and to love others as myself. I command my heart, mind and tongue to be quick to hear and slow to speak in Jesus Name. I command every spirit of rudeness, coarse joking, idle talk, foul language and everything else that does not glorify Jesus Christ to leave me in Jesus Name. I receive the spirit of kindness, thanksgiving, patience, humility and goodness.”
Amen!
