Great colouful bird shots bro...no Kea though, to be expected in OZ.

I see around the house here in Florida, brown and blond hawks ready to swoop on the poor unsuspecting squirrels, and some blue jays and red cardinals that are very intelligent birds...

They're interesting... They look graceful.
A note: These birds at birth and adolescence are much lighter (white) in colour. They acquire the gray/grey sandy color because they drink Sulphur and the Iron tainted waters...in the lawn from the sprinkler water source and from wells and the lakes...
I forgot to add in the Iron in my initial post...

from a better source than me...they explain it much better..
----------------------------------
Adult cranes have grey feathers. They paint them with iron-laden mud and vegetation to turn them rust-color for camouflage during breeding season. They have a bright red skin patch on their forehead.

Secondly, how do you tell the difference between a male and female sandhill crane? Sandhill crane males are slightly larger than females, weighing up to 14 pounds. Females remain closer to 10 pounds. The birds grow up to 5 feet in height measured from toe to the top of the head when they are standing on the ground. The male is generally a couple inches taller than the female.

Consequently, why are some sandhill cranes Brown?

Although the feathers are gray, sometimes they can have a reddish-brown appearance. This is because sandhill cranes preen themselves by rubbing mud on their feathers and mud from iron-rich environments is often red.

I believe from memory that the pink flamingos are that color for similar reasons... Diet.

So are they native to Australia?

Seems like Australia is in many ways truly unique when it comes to flora and fauna...
There are several species. The above particular one is endemic to south eastern Australia but normally found in rainforests and at the edge of dryer forests... It is a massive fluke... And blessing... To see one in my backyard.

This is the male, and an example of the very impressive nests they put together to attract the female, stealing anything blue from the local neighborhood.1280px-Satin_Bowerbird_at_his_bower_JCB.jpg 1280px-Satin_Bowerbird_1_-_Brunkerville.jpg

Just for the laughs...

If I dyed my hair blonde, maybe I could be a future replacement for Marty Deeks in NCIS LA. :D
