I'm getting Valentine's cookies that pop into the oven at the store and then I'm having an online virtual party on here. :D (Btw John, I hope you have something more romantic planned for your wife than that even though that cake sounds good. What about the roses, candy, card, and romantic music? Your wife deserves to be treated like royalty!! :D)

I'm thinking about making a heart shaped orange marmalade cake with some tempered chocolate butterflies on top to celebrate.

My wifey and son might enjoy all of that.

April's Virtual Valentine's Day Announcement

Hehe... My ex-husband was very good about things like that in the beginning. He did very well at winning me over and treated me like gold. He acted as a very good man.

The next year, he didn't put in a lot of effort... he threw a box of $1 Charlie Brown chocolates down on the bed and went straight to sleep for the rest of the day. We had the kind of relationship where we could laugh about where he messed up, so we did that, but I was still pretty disappointed. Not about him being cheap and unplanned, but the quality time was important.

Sometime after that, he sent me messages of our old conversations before we got married for fun, and I hadn't realized how much I complained about my life when we first got together (I was in a dangerous position he saved me from) and apologized for it, but he said, "You just needed someone to talk to." That made up for it. Even after everything else worse he did way later, including being unfaithful, I still can't get mad.

I'm always impressed when I hear about the nice things men do for their wives.

Had to look up a picture on the internet, but one of these old Whitman boxes ... It's just a sampler. I think they came with like 5 really bad chocolates. lol Back then, Walmart had a full rack of them on display for $1. (Keep in mind this was like 2008 or something. Not sure if they're around today!)

Then how do you explain this verses?

Deu 12:30 Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.
31Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.
32¶What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

Jer 10:3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

1Co 10:21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Sorry I missed this part, shinethelight32.

What's demonic about loving people and spending time with a person? Giving a person a card and wishing them a happy valentines day has nothing to do with worshipping false gods. "...their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods" What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

On the flipside, and despite my bitterness towards Valentines Day, I would say that it is the opposite, because "whoever loves others has fulfilled the law." One day out of 365 days as reminder to do so isn't a bad thing.

"Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. -Romans 13:8

Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. - Romans 13:10

It might be a little weird that we celebrate St Valentine's execution by sending chocolates to each other, but nothing wrong with expressing love to our loved ones at Valentine's day.

We don't celebrate his death, we celebrate his life and the fact that he felt that he was doing God's work by helping lovers get married and put other's needs above his own safety.

Should Christians stop celebrating valentines day? There is no commandment in scripture to do so. I wonder what God is thinking about right now, the things that his children should not associate with.
'Howbeit then, when ye knew not God,
ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God,
how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements,
whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.'

(Gal 4:11)

Hello @shinethelight32,

I have never, ever questioned this, never even been curious as to who St Valentine was! So thank you for bringing this up, for I have now found out that St. Valentine, quote:- (died in 3rd century, Rome; feast day February 14), name of one or two legendary Christian martyrs whose lives seem to be historically based. Although the Roman Catholic Church continues to recognize St. Valentine as a saint of the church, he was removed from the General Roman Calendar in 1969 because of the lack of reliable information about him. He is the patron saint of lovers, epileptics and beekeepers. o_O (ref. www.Brittanica)

I have never associated this very commercialised practice of sending cards to someone loved on the 14th February, as having any bearing at all on Christianity, so it has never been an issue, it's commercial nature making it more secular than religious. It has been adopted along with many other things as something traditionally done, like bonfire night on November 5th.

I think I may, at some time in the distant past, have sent an anonymous card to someone for the fun of it, but that was the extent of my participation in this day. Hmmm? interesting. :)

With love in Christ Jesus
Chris

Bonfire night?

Never heard of it. Can you explain?
Hello @JohnDB,

'Bonfire night,' is, 'Guy Fawkes day' when fires are constructed and lit all over the country in the UK, and fireworks set off. To 'remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot', as the song says. Guy Fawkes, was part of a conspiracy to blow up the houses of parliament in London in 1605. An effigy is made of Guy Fawkes and set up on the fire and burned on November 5th. Children used to make these figures and take them around their neighbourhood in the hope of being given money for their efforts. :) The best fire of the night was a matter of great competition, and a lot of sabotage took place under cover of night. With potatoes being baked in the flames, along with chestnuts, it was great fun, but highly dangerous. Today, fires are still constructed and fireworks set off, but only under strict supervision.

Thank you
with love in Christ Jesus
Chris

How many understand what it means to live by Bible principles ? Probably most have never heard a religious leader in Christendom even mention "Bible principles", but just "believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved". For example, when a person studies electrical theory, they are examining the fundamental laws of electricity, such as Ohm's law or V=IR, with the V meaning voltage and IR meaning "current" plus R resistance. This formula is applicable anywhere on the earth, and those who understand it are able to differentiate between AC and DC current.

And the more a person studies electrical theory or application of electricity, they can make sound decisions concerning its use, such as realizing that you do not place a 110 volt appliance in a 220 volt socket, if it is possible to do so or that resistance should be on the negative or ground side and not positive side of current.

The same can be said of Bible principles, for once a person begins to "mentally put the pieces together", which is the meaning of the Greek word syniemi that Jesus used six times at Matthew 13 (verses 13-15, 19, 23, 51) regarding "the Kingdom of the heavens" (Matt 13:11), then a person can begin to grasp what is pleasing to God and what is not, what he is to observe and what he is not.(Note: God's personal name is Jehovah, Ps 83:18; Isa 26:4, KJV)

So, when a person looks carefully into the Bible, what do they find ? That when the Mosaic Law covenant was in force, from 1513 B.C.E. till 33 C.E., all Jews were required to observe a series of festivals and days, such as the sabbath every seven days (Ex 16:22-26), the Passover on Abib 14 ( Ex 12:6; 13:4; Note: the month Abib was changed to the name of Nisan after the Jews release from ancient Babylon in 539 B.C.E., after the Babylonian month of Nissan), and the three seasonal festivals at Exodus 23.

But when Jesus came as the promised Messiah in 29 C.E., over the course of the next 3 1/2 years, he fulfilled the Mosaic Law covenant with its series of observances (Matt 5:17), nailing it to the torture stake.(Gal 3:13; Col 2:13, 14) He thus abolished the Mosaic Law covenant with all its observances (Heb 8:13) and established "a new covenant" for a heavenly "Kingdom".(Luke 22:29)

In so doing, hours before his execution at the demand of the Jewish religious leaders, Jesus established that only one thing was to be observed, for Luke 22 states: "Also, he took a loaf, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them, saying: “This means my body, which is to be given in your behalf. Keep doing this in remembrance of me.” Also, he did the same with the cup after they had the evening meal, saying: “This cup means the new covenant by virtue of my blood, which is to be poured out in your behalf."(Luke 22:19, 20) Jesus showed that only one observance was from Jehovah God, the Lord's Evening Meal.(see 1 Cor 11:23-26)

At Matthew 15, after having condemned the wicked Pharisees for their calloused view of honoring their parents, so that they made God's word invalid, they were stumbled over his words, and Jesus told his disciples: "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant will be uprooted. Let them be. Blind guides is what they are. If, then, a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit.”(Matt 15:3-14)

Thus, only the Lord's Evening Meal is from Jehovah God, and all other so-called "Christian" observances are not, so what should this cause a person to do ? How should Bible principles play a role in making any decision ?(see Prov 14:8 that says: "By wisdom the shrewd man understands the way he is going, but the stupid are deceived by their foolishness.")

Should christians stop celebrating Valentine's Day
OP ^

Establishing a particular Day to Celebrate-
ANYTHING-
Is simply a collaboration to Join together in Recognizing the Signifiance of particular "Persons" or "EVENT"...
Typically...
A Memory of Individuals, brought to a forefront (i.e. An Established Celebration Day) of a GOOD "Memory" ...of OF special significance.

•Jesus' Birthday-
•Jesus' Death AND Resurrection Day-
Birthdays-
•American Independence Day of a Free People.
•American Memorial Day; Honoring the Fallen who Contributed to Keeping the People's Freedom.

•Big businesses- Have seized Commercial Opportunities...
• to overload the markets with foreign imports,
•in an Effort to Entice the People...
•to focus more on their gimmic "trinkets"..
•than the purpose and intent of a special memory.

The Tide has Turned...
•Don't send a b'day greeting/ Card/ give a Gift...and ohh ohh, Anger and Depression spins off the charts.
•Don't get a new outfit, prance off to Church...oooh, oooh...a Topic of anger and gossip.
• Don't put up lights, Party with others, give Gifts, Receive invitations, receive gifts...
at Christmas...ooooh, ooooh....the anger, pressure, anxiety, depression, sadness, gossip...over the Top.

It's a Successful Propaganda Tactic...
And People fall for it, and happily participate in it...and "feel good" to be "in agreement";
To hopefully make others "feel bad" who DO NOT GET ON Board.

(And ...IF one does "fall for feeling bad"...
For not participating; Big Phrama to the rescue!)

LOL- And for All who jump ON Board...BIG BIG Celebrations.... :p ON CREDIT!!! ( they really can't Afford )... After the limelight and fun has passed... Pharma is there for "you too",...as your Bills come DUE! :(

Keep in memory of Particular person's or Events? Sure... We do...Every Day.
"Celebrate" on an Established Day?
Sure we do...in the Same "Simplistic ways and means"...with the focus on the REASON...NOT the Commercial Propaganda.
:) The celebration "Merry"
:) Everyone "Happy" then and thereafter.

If you do a research, valentines day was originated from a roman pagan festival called Lupercalia, that would occur on February 15 around same time as Valentines Day. So when Roman Constantine started the roman catholic church, he would change everything from pagan practices to roman church holiday, to as trying to Christianize it. But remember, Roman Catholic Church has a bad history of hatred towards the Jews. They do not want any part of Jewish or Hebrew holy days, but instead adopting their own by their pagan practices. This is why I believe it is wrong, not only wrong, but also an abomination to Christians in God's eyes. Why do you want to choose this day with the world, to make extra special to the person that you love while you can do that every single day? What would your response would be if God ask you, when you give an account to Him, why that you would make this day extra special with the world while there is no biblical command so? Just sink that in your mind.

Are you suggesting Celebrating Valentine’s Day (showing someone you love them) is a cup of the devil?

"Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ." Col 2:16-17
These verses refer to holy days, feast days set by God in the OT. Valentine's Day isn't one of those, nor is Christmas or Easter, which are among several pagan-rooted man-made holidays. They all go back to ba'al worship.

No offense intended....

God never set a holy day for showing love. We're supposed to be rooted and grounded in love and walk in sacrificial love daily. Personally, I'd rather expressions of love be genuine and spontaneous, and not contrived on a specific date with obligation and competition with others. What's wrong with going back to the scriptural basis of what love is, and how that is to look between husband and wife? Little fake baby cherubs and chocolates ...some bouquet of flowers or roses that will fade and die .... money spent because it's a special day on the calendar when everyone is expected to do so. Imo, it's a waste. Real love is deeper than that.

You are correct. In Colossians 2:16, you look into the deeper context, it talking about do not let PAGANS (man) judge you in drink, meat, new moon, holy days, and the sabbath. Because those things are a shadow of things to come. Why would Paul prevent believers to observe holy days? And also if Paul sees a believer adopting pagan practices into the church, how would he respond?
