In Old Testament times, the "sons of God" applied to either Satan's angels that rebelled during the flood of Noah's day, or to the angels that sang for joy per the Book of Job.
In the New Testament, those in Christ Jesus are now called "sons of God". The idea of 'children of God' is interchangeable for those in Christ Jesus.
