Starting to understand "hate his own life"

Luke 14:26

26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

I believe Im beginning to understand why we should hate our own lives to inherit eternal life.

The business of living and it's duties can be such a distraction from seeking God. Life itself is essentially forcing us to attend to it's business and not focus on God's presence as much.

We tend to learn things through failures. It is through failure that we see our true condition. We might escape the bullet and think we are doing well for a number of times until our number is up. When the truth hits us, we want to crawl under a rock...OR...come humbly before the Lord ready for whatever He wants of us. David was like that...going before God in humility after his many failures.

Here is my take on HATING one's life.

I think this is about no longer seeing oneself as an individual...hating the life that is independent from God. Our salvation, our safety, is to belong to Christ...to be INSIDE His Body. We see life from THERE...from that vantage point. In my instruction in righteousness I have gradually, over time, stopped caring about my own condition...instead seeing myself as a small part of a greater whole. That is our way into wholeness. We shrink ourselves into it. People are looking to be elevated...but we are to humble ourselves into wholeness.

Dig roots downward and bear fruit upward. (Is 37:31, 2 Kings 19:30)

Regarding Paul…

His body is “still” mortal…
He gets hot, tired, angry, overwhelmed, impatient, sick, upset, scared etc….

All the things that “we all experience”… and troublesome when “your mission” is Preach to Jews, Gentiles, kings…
That may rather “ plot to kill you, than lend their ear to you.”

Love and Hate as action words, we commit ourselves to serving God, doing what pleases Him, doing what He intends for us, and hating our own lives, working to put that old man to death. Like this:

This is hatred that says, "whatever you try to build up, I'm going to tear it down", because we love God, so we want His life to prevail, not our fleshy life.
