"there was evening and there was morning, the first day" - This record represents the first day of History; this is not the first day of the beginning.

In Job we read: "where were you when I laid the foundation of the world"? Laying the foundation is not recorded in any of the 6 days of this creation. Also, God separated the waters from the waters, but the waters are not recorded in the 6 days as having been created then, and niether the heavens. We know that before the First day, in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. It was here, before the first day, that Satan was cast out of heaven and on to the earth..."and the earth was void and formless, and darkness was upon the surface of the deep", the end of pre-history. God said, on the first day, "Let there be light"; Morning and Evening - Day One, first recorded day in History, beginning of time.

Laying the foundation is not recorded in any of the 6 days of this creation.
The very first verse in the Bible says that "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." I don't think that was as much a statement leading into the six days, but rather it is telling us he started with making outer space and the planet earth.

God separated the waters from the waters, but the waters are not recorded in the 6 days as having been created then,
Genesis 1:2 says "Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."

From what we gather from the first two verses, God started by making outer space and the planet earth which was a giant ball of water until the third day when he gathered the waters and made dry land appear.
