Hi there,
So this is a fairly simple concept, when you understand it, but it can be difficult to communicate. The idea is this: when God talks about the "morning and the evening" he is talking about a span of time, that He creates. In the beginning, God says "let there be light" - at this point in time, the Earth is not revolving in its position around the Sun, so the light is constant, but it doesn't reach the dark side of the Earth. The second Day God asks for the waters to be separated, this - from a bombardment of meteors - puts the Earth in a faster rotation, but the morning and the evening are still the markers of the Day. The first Day then, is millions of years, because the Earth does not rotate, but the second Day, is hundreds of thousands of years, because the Earth has begun to rotate faster.
The temptation is to think "well, every Day in Genesis must be a faster and faster rotation" God is not saying He works like that. How would God create the creatures, if He was still bombarding the Earth with meteors? The point is that once the Earth starts moving at a faster rotation, the creatures and so on that He creates, are added to the Day He has created - whatever Day is most appropriate. The more God creates, the more life becomes powerful - until with the Creation of Adam and Eve, we have God-conscious creatures who resound in the Love of God. Once God has created the rotation of the Earth, then He can build on the predictability of the Days. So it is that the creatures God creates respond to the rotation of the Earth on the third Day (remember someone else coming to life on the third day? Jesus?).
What you should be getting from this, is that the speed at which the morning and evening are experienced by the Earth, determines how long they are for. I hope this has been of some encouragement.
God bless.
