Through faith or through trying not to sin?

It is through faith in what Jesus did on the cross. Not faith in efforts to not sin.

A person has overcome sin when they place their belief, faith, trust, and confidence in the work of Jesus on the cross, His shed blood. They are placed "in Christ" by the Holy Spirit when they place their belief, faith, trust, and confidence in the work of Jesus on the cross, His shed blood.

But religious people place their faith in trying not to sin, in their works.

Your idea of walking in the Spirit is trying to walk without sinning.

My idea is that walking in the Spirit is placing your belief, faith, trust and confidenc in Jesus' work on the cross.

Your idea gives you glory in what you do for God.

My idea gives Jesus all the glory.

Romans 7:25
25 I thank God — through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
NKJV

We are to believe into Christ not believe in something Jesus did. You cannot claim a past historic event for yourself. That is the height of religious presumption. Jesus Christ is the Lamb of God...not the lamb of men's exploitation. You are very confused on this. The ancient Israelites themselves applied the blood to their doorpostrs at Passover. We DO NOT apply the blood of Christ ourselves. God works the salvation...so no man can boast of how saved he is. No man can boast. God decides.

Our own faith means little...there is no power in our own faith excpt maybe to deceive ourselves... let's call it your theory. To enter into Christ we need the faith of Christ. Your scheme involves using your own presumptuous belief to claim something for yourself that reveals no power to DO anything. So it is all make believe. Then you turn on those who have received power from on high and claim they are trying to be saved by works...how can you not be judged? If you were a small child you could be excused this amazing lack of reality in your ludicrous claims.

Let's look at those things one by one, which Apostle Paul said were acts of walking by the flesh, and not by The Spirit to be in Christ's Grace...

Gal 5:19-21
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
(KJV)

1. Adultery (Greek moicheia) - Biblically, that is about sexual relations outside of marriage. Like to practice that? believe on our Lord Jesus by Faith and still like to do that adultery? You're walking by your flesh, and not by The Spirit; you are cut off from God's Kingdom lest you 'repent' to Christ Jesus and end that practice.

2. Fornication (Greek porneia) - that's about sexual relations outside marriage for those who are 'not married', like a single person. That includes the acts of homosexual relations between men and men; women and women. Like doing those things? Believe on Christ Jesus and still practice that fruit? You're walking by your flesh, and not by The Spirit. God's Kingdom is cut off to you lest you repent to Christ Jesus and stop doing that fruit of the flesh.

3. Uncleanness (Greek akatharsia) - that is about both physical impurity, and moral impurity, perverseness. Some people are too lazy to bath themselves; that's a sin against the body. Dwelling on perverse things, pornogragphy, vial literature, movies, TV, immorality. Like those things, though you may believe on Christ Jesus? Sorry, you're cut off from God's Kingdom lest you repent to Christ and make a change away from that fruit.

4. Lasciviousness (Greek aselgeia) - unbridled lust, excess, wantoness, insolent behavior, shamelessness, acts like profanity, disrespect of authority, anarchy, rebellion, money grubbing. Like to do those things as believer on Christ? Repent.

5. Idolatry (Greek eidoloatreia) - having other gods in worship instead of The One True LORD GOD. Think it's OK to believe on Christ Jesus and practice eastern idol worship of other religions? including bowing to idols in mystical fraternity initiate rituals? Repent to Christ of those things, lest God's Kingdom be cut off from you.

6. Witchcraft (Greek pharmakeia) - practice of ceremonial and black magic, drug abuse, incantations, casting spells, curses, occult literature and movies, Taro reading, palm reading, tea leave reading, necromancy, thaumatergy, mysticicism, New Age culture. Believe on Christ and still like to get into those things, maybe only for entertainment? Repent lest God's Kingdom be cut off from you.

7. Hatred (Greek echthra) - hatred of God, hatred of people, your family, friends, acquaintances; anti-social behaviour, rebellion, seditions, tempting others to sin, anarchy, etc. Repent, for we are not to allow hatred to take hold of us being in Christ, even though we are allowed to defend ourselves against His enemies that would destroy us (Luke 22).

8. Variance (Greek eris) - contention, strife, wrangling. Some don't particularly care about either side in an argument, they just love to argue and cause strife because they thinks it fun, period. That kind of thinking is of anarchists, those who rebel against anything available just to be rebellious. They like to stir up battles between two parties and then back off and watch the sparks. Repent.

9. Emulations (Greek zelos) - envy, jealousy. Jealous of the rich? jealous of a family member? or against a friend or co-worker? Repent, for such zealous emotions of envy, covetness and jealousy are behaviours that lead to destruction of one's life and lives around them.

10. Wrath (Greek thumos) - ardor, passions of anger leading to unrighteous behavior, inflaming wine. Like to cut lose every once in a while and go drinking? get angry at the world and let it fly? Leads to destructional behavior. Repent.

11. Strife (Greek eritheia) - intrige (political office), self-seeking pursuits, selfishness, vainglory. Believe on Jesus but still like to try and put youself above others, before others, better-than-they-are? Repent.

12. Seditions (Greek dichostsis) - disunion, dissention, divisive, revolt. Do you go into a Church in order to split the congregation so you can get part of them to follow you across the street to form your own church? Do you desire to create a revolution to divide the peoples? Repent. We are to peacefully seek a redress of grievances against us, that's God's way.

13. Heresies (Greek hairesis) - dissensions arising from divisive factions. Do you like to create your own cult 'faction' to serve you? or your own doctrine, or the doctrines of other men? Do you support mens traditions that do? Repent.

14. Envyings (Greek phthonos) - ill-will, envy, covetness. Do you believe the one with the most toys wins? Believe on Christ and still follow the Jones' with all thy getting? Repent.

15. Murders (Greek phonos) - do you murder? have problems with pre-meditating to kill someone? Believe on Christ yet still believe in doing that? Repent.

16. Drunkeness (Greek methe) - get drunk as a practice? think its cool? Repent.

17. Revelings (Greek komos) - rioting, (practiced in Bacchus worship; drunken people paraded the streets rioting in honor of the pagan god Bacchus). Communism likes to create such things, but not in support of pagan worship, but in support of overthrow of governments and nations. Believe in Christ Jesus and still think doing those things is OK? Repent.

We see Apostle Paul was giving 'specific' acts of the flesh that can get us in trouble if we follow them, things which the Gentiles were guilty of before The Gospel was preached to them. And we still see those fruits of the flesh going on in the world today, some of them even to a greater degree than in past history.
