The same way some people may throw in a statue of a gnome to decorate their garden, in the 18th century, it was an ordinary custom for wealthy estate owners to hire an actual live-in real-life ‘hermit’ to live in their garden. The hermits for hire would live in shacks, huts or caves constructed in the gardens. This peculiar practice was mostly found in England, Scotland and Ireland. According to Gordon Campbell, a Professor of Renaissance Studies at the University of Leicester, the hermits for hire were mostly agricultural workers, dressed in a druid’s costume. The ornamental hermit vanished at the end of the 18th century. From Baba Mail website.

This is nice. This guy unstops springs in the desert for wild horses, burros and other animals.

When I visited my uncles and grandma about 1972, there was a small herd of wild horses that ran across the road. That was in Arizona.
