The same way some people may throw in a statue of a gnome to decorate their garden, in the 18th century, it was an ordinary custom for wealthy estate owners to hire an actual live-in real-life ‘hermit’ to live in their garden. The hermits for hire would live in shacks, huts or caves constructed in the gardens. This peculiar practice was mostly found in England, Scotland and Ireland. According to Gordon Campbell, a Professor of Renaissance Studies at the University of Leicester, the hermits for hire were mostly agricultural workers, dressed in a druid’s costume.
