One of my early assignments as a civil engineer working for the government was being sent to eastern Kentucky to speak with an angry (and violent) crowd led by close relatives of country music singer Loretta Lynn. They didn’t say a word to me, nor I to them. Crouched behind a vehicle with gunfire from the crowd ringing in my ears, smoke and flames still rising near us from the fires they had set - a warm welcome, I guess we could say - the sheriff said to me, “They’re talking to you. Can’t you hear them, boy?”

I could. I did. Loud and clear.

I came. I saw. I heard. I left. And wrote a report which was promptly “misfiled by a clerk.”
