The Crusades main objective was to defend Europe and Christianity from the evil forces of Islam. The Muslim attack and invasion had been going on for over 4 centuries while the peaceful Papacy sat idle and remained passive up from 620 to 1095.

Seeing millions of Christians being slaughtered and taken into slavery and seeing Christian kingdoms, including the Papacy, being constantly attacked by Islam, they had no choice but to defend themselves.
