“Yahweh God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

(Genesis 2:7, WEB)

Dust + breath of life = a living soul

Dust - breath of life = a non-living soul

A brief survey of translations.

”then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living creature.”

(ESV)

”Then the LORD God took dust from the ground and made a man. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nose, and the man became a living thing.

(ERV)

”Then the LORD God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

(HCSB)

”when Yahweh God formed the man of dust from the ground and he blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

(LEB)

”Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.

A living soul = a living creature, a living thing, a living being, a living person.

***

”then the LORD God formed [that is, created the body of] man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being [an individual complete in body and spirit].”

“who before were disobedient when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.”

(1 Peter3:20, WEB)

“because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.”

(ESV)

“Who in the past were disobedient, when God patiently waited in the days of Noah while an ark was being prepared. In it a few - that is, eight people - were saved through water.”

(HCSB)

“who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight lives, were saved through water.”

“and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”

(Ecclesiastes 12:7, WEB)

”And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath returns to God who gave it.”

(LEB)

”And the dust returns to the earth as it once was, and the life breath returns to God who gave it.”

(NABRE)

”and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the life’s breath returns to God who gave it.”

(NET)

”So our bodies return to the earth, and the life-giving breath returns to God.”

(CEV)

”Our bodies go back into the ground as dust. The breath of our life goes back to God, who gave it to us.”

(EASY)

”Our bodies will return to the dust of the earth, and the breath of life will go back to God, who gave it to us.”

The body contains trillions of cells
The cells contain trillions of atoms

A soul is mortal. A mortal soul may become immortal.

How? That brings us to the gospel of the kingdom of God preached by Jesus and the apostles.

“The soul who sins will die.”

(NKJV)

“The person who sins will die.”

(NASB)

“The one who sins will die.”

(NIV)

***

“For all [souls] have sinned.”

(Romans 3:23, HCSB)

A lost person [a soul] asks saved persons [saved souls] -

“What must I [a lost soul] do to be saved?”

(Acts 16:30)

The way a lost soul becomes a saved soul is found in the gospel.

Being wise and applying what we‘ve seen scripture say about souls: he who wins souls is he who wins _______ .

Soul winning is the Messiah’s great commission.

“The breath in our nostrils is God’s gift moment by moment.“ - C.H. Spurgeon

God gives this gift of life temporarily to all souls.

***

”For [your Father who is in heaven] makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.”

(Matthew 5:45, WEB)

Amplification is mine.

The evil and the good; the just and the unjust. Souls. God is good to all souls.

I remember, a long time ago, on a forum far, far away, a member (who has long since gone on to glory) accused me of being "soulish".

"Soulish". From the Greek word "Psuchikon", contrasted with "Pneumatikon". The Greek words for "Soul" versus "Spirit", referencing 1 Corinthians 15.
