Yes-but-no explanations don't get it. It's speculation--or worse the Goldwater Rule you mentioned being violated for public approval, gerrymandering. You know, a long time ago, there was something like that. Barry Goldwater was notoriously easy to goad into saying things that made him look unstable or unwise, while he was one of the most sane people in Congress. It was so bad that the "Goldwater Rule" was adopted by mental health professionals making it unethical to diagnose public figures without actually testing them. Goldwater, after about a year of that, became more careful. Trump seems unable to learn to manage himself. And yes, while Trump seems to be experiencing symptoms of dementia, there have been a few mental health professionals who have unethically diagnosed him as such. All we can say is that his behavior is consistent with dementia.
When people say that he's losing it, we (including myself) all need to remember that there can be other reasons for his behavior.
But why assume the worse--what kind of behavioral issue is that? Surely there is a name for it--there is! It's called: Catastrophizing, and therapeutic treatments—such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)—are frequently used to help individuals identify catastrophic thoughts, reality-test the likelihood of the worst-case scenario actually happening, and reframe those thoughts into a more realistic perspective.
Or...maybe it's just the worst kind of political bias.
Meanwhile, the actual explanation--that when the enemy turns and is on the run, you run all the more to cut them down--is simply denied. But that IS what you are watching.
