Understanding Seer’s
This is not a comprehensive study but some personal insights into the office of a seer/prophet. The seer is one of the most beautiful and misunderstood expressions in the prophetic family that exists today. Many people think a seer must fully understand everything they see or hear. Others assume seers are simply dreamers or people with discernment. But in Scripture, the seer is a very specific prophetic expression with its own purpose, fruit, and function.Let’s look at this biblically and practically, beginning with what the Bible tells us and then bringing it into how God uses seers today.
What Is a Seer? (A Biblical Definition)
In Scripture, a seer is someone who receives revelation through visions, dreams, symbolic pictures, and visual encounters. Their primary prophetic language is sight. A seer sees what God is revealing and sometimes hears. A prophet speaks forth what God is saying. Both are prophetic, but their mode is different.In Scripture, “seer” and “prophet” were once two different titles, but they referred to the same kind of person, someone who received revelation from God. Over time, the older term "seer" faded, and "prophet" became the standard word. (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he would say, “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is called a prophet today was formerly called a seer.) 1 Samuel 9:9
A seer receives revelation visually, whereas a prophet hears and delivers revelation verbally.
They are not opposites or separate ministries. One person can be both, like Samuel (seer), who “saw” in visions but also stood before the nation and spoke as God’s prophet.

Seers And Revelations
A seer has the responsibility of sharing what they see but is not always able to interpret it immediately.Daniel - Daniel saw the visions yet he did not understand until God gave an explanation.
“I, Daniel, was troubled… and the visions… disturbed me.” Daniel 7:15, “Then I wanted to know the meaning…” Daniel 7:19
Daniel saw first, then understanding came second.
Zechariah - Zechariah repeatedly asked angels, "What are these my lord?" Zechariah 4:4. He needed help to understand.
Peter - Peter saw a rooftop vision and had no idea what it meant until later. "Peter was wondering about the meaning of the vision...." Acts 10:17
John the Apostle - "I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people, the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus. When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me, “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.” Revelation 17:6-7.
This shows that interpretation often comes after revelation. Having dreams and visions does not necessarily make you a seer, just as speaking out what you hear through revelation does not necessarily make you a prophet. The office of a seer or prophet is a ministry gift; however, every believer can have a dream or a vision or prophesy.
The Fruit of a Seer
Jesus said we know spiritual authenticity by fruit (Matt. 7:16). A true seer, like any prophetic minister, carries fruit that reflects the Holy Spirit.a. Their Revelation Brings Light, Not Confusion. God reveals deep things to bring clarity.
“He reveals deep and hidden things… light dwells with Him.” Daniel 2:22
The fruit of a seer is clarity, direction, understanding, and dismantling confusion. A seer also bears personal manifestations of fruit: integrity, humility, purity of heart and a submitted spirit to God.b. Their Ministry Leads People Toward God.
Seer revelation often exposes sin or aligns hearts to God’s will. Samuel, Gad, and Daniel all brought people back to obedience.
c. Their Revelation Aligns With Scripture. A seer never contradicts the written Word. “…test the spirits…” 1 John 4:1
d. Their Insight Helps Others, Not Just Themselves
Every seer in Scripture served others: kings, nations, and today, churches. Their gift is never self-exalting.
How Seers Function Today (Biblical Pattern)
The New Testament continues the seer realm even if the word “seer” itself is less common.People still dream (Acts 2:17), see visions (Acts 10; Acts 16), receive symbolic imagery (Revelation), and
see angelic encounters (Acts 12; Acts 27) Seers Receive Visual Revelation
Just like Daniel, Zechariah, Peter, and John. This includes dreams. - symbolic visions - pictures - spiritual scenes - open visions - Revelations.
They Bring Insight, Warning, and Guidance. Biblical seers often warned kings and nations (Gad, Daniel).
Today, seers often help: Pastors, intercessors, leaders, worship teams, prayer warriors, churches, ministries They see what others may not notice in the spiritual realm.
They Strengthen, Encourage, and Build Up
The goal is New Testament prophetic purpose: “Strengthening, encouraging and comfort.” 1 Corinthians 14:3.
A Seer’s revelation is never for show; it is to edify.
They Often Work Alongside Other Gifts
All gifts are meant to function together.They Wait for Interpretation When Necessary
A seer may share the vision first, then the interpretation when God reveals it. This is biblical. Like Joseph said: “Do not interpretations belong to God?” Genesis 40:8 Interpretation is a separate grace. (gifting)Does a Seer Need to Understand a Dream or Vision?
Not always. Sometimes when a seer is working in a team ministry, the lord will allow the team to work together in unity. 16 He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. Ephesians 4:16 (NLT).A seer should, faithfully report what they saw, seek understanding, wait on the Holy Spirit and avoid guessing or forcing interpretation
If the vision or dream contains correction or direction, it is wise to wait for clarity.
If the vision or dream is symbolic, it may be shared “as seen,” while acknowledging that understanding may come later.
The seer’s responsibility is faithfulness, not “being impressive.”
Conclusion:
At the end of the day, the seer’s gift is not about having perfect understanding; it’s about being faithful to what God shows them. Scripture proves that even Daniel, Zechariah, and Peter didn’t always understand their visions right away. What matters is the fruit their lives are bearing: humility, purity, clarity, and alignment with God’s Word and the way the revelation inspired by the Holy Spirit strengthens and guides others.A seer today functions much like they did in the Bible. They see what God is revealing, they hear as well and they share it with integrity or they seek interpretation. Their fruit speaks louder than their gift. A true seer doesn’t need to know everything; they just need to be faithful to the One who shows them all things according to his will.
