The phrase, "...it is written..." is used over 60 times in the NT.

Jesus used it!

Paul used it!

Peter used it!

So where were they quoting from?

Just what did they use to minister with?

Where did they get the definition of sin?

Where did they get the knowledge of what was right or what was wrong?

So again......when they said, "...it is written...", where was IT written?

Where the phrase "it is written," appears, the speaker/writer is referring back to the Old Testament, as during Jesus' life the New Testament was ocurring, but was not being written down. With Paul, only a few parts of the New Testament as we know it today would have been written. Thus, "it is written" refers to the Old Testament.

So the "New" Christians were being taught from the OT!

It was from the OT that Jesus, Paul, Peter and ALL of the apostles ministered.

And it was from the OT that the people, these "New" Christians, learned what sin was.

And since sin did NOT change from the OT to the NT, that meant God's laws did not change.

It was a sin to covet in the OT and Paul tells us it was still a sin to covet in the NT;

"...I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet."

Again we see Paul going back to the OT to teach these "New" Christians about God's laws and that they should not be broken.

What I am getting at is that the ONLY book that was available to use to teach God's word was the OT.

It's what Jesus taught from!

It's what Paul taught from!

And all of the other apostles taught these "New" Christians from the OT!

And what did they learn.......?

God's laws, commandments, statutes and ALL that was given in His word!

You have conveniently left out Jesus Christ and his new covenant.

The Old testament was the forerunner to the new.

Much of the old is still applicable today but we are not under the law like the OT Israelite was.

Unless you are an observant Jew today.

It often sounds like you wish you were or have I misunderstood ?

Thanks

Martin.

One other point to remember is that one of the reasons the law was given was to show that we could not keep it perfectly. Thus we need a Savior.

So your saying that the Lord of creation gave the law to show us that we could not keep it.... in other words he was setting us up to fail. God is not an unjust God. The law has always been here. Rom 5:13
[sup]13[/sup](For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
1 John 3:4 [sup]4[/sup]Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Paul said until the law(sacrificial law) sin ( transgression of the law) was already in the world. You can see two laws here!!! People keep attributing the sacrificial law with the royal law.
Lets look at Paul writing to the Galatians 3:21
[sup]21[/sup]Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Now look at Rom 7:7-10
[sup]7[/sup]What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. [sup]8[/sup]But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.

[sup]9[/sup]For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

[sup]10[/sup]And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

Do you see the difference in the two laws here? "for if there had been a law given which could have given life", and the commandment, which was ordained to life.

Paul use the word "law" to cover "sacrificial law" and "royal law".....Check out Peter's WARNING!!!!!! 2 Peter 3 : 15-16

[sup]15[/sup]And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;

[sup]16[/sup]As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Don't take my word for it. Pray to the Lord to see the truth of the word. Remember there is only one truth. This is salvation we're talking about here. Lets make sure we are doing all we can to get it!!!!

And just how do YOU go about deciding which still applies? You cannot have it both ways! Either they all apply, except for the ONE set of laws that was nailed to the cross, or NONE of them!

Paul tells us they still apply;

"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law."

Also....could please quote, Book, Chap and verse where God's word states that He gave us HIs laws to show that we could not keep them perfectly. And where does it states we MUST keep them perfectly?

Wh
at kind of sense does that make?

"...And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses..."

"...As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias..."

"...And David himself saith in the book of Psalms..."

"...as it is written in the book of the prophets..."

"...which are written in the book of the law..."

The books that were read by Jesus, Paul, Peter and ALL of the apostles were ALL the books of the OT; Gen - Mal.

It was from the OT that these "New" Christians learned the word of God.

They learned the Laws of God from the OT!

They learned the ways of God from the OT!

They learned the punishment of God from the OT!

They learned the reward of God from the OT!

They learned how to raise their family from the OT!

They learned how to love their spouse from the OT!

ALL they learned they learned from the OT!

Let's read what else they learned from the OT....

2 Tim.3
[14] But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
[15] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Now what "...holy scriptures..." is Paul speaking of here?

The OT!!!!!!

So even SALVATION could be gained by reading the OT!!!

WOW, thats a stretch, I think you are misunderstanding Paul's statement. The Greek word translated as wisdom here is sophizo and in this context means to have understanding. So while reading the OT can help us to understand why we need the salvation that comes from trusting in Christ, the OTof itself cannot give us salvation.

[size="4"]Really? Then how is it ALL of the saints of old died with a "...good report..."? All they had was the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets!
[/size]
"And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:"

And yet they will be in God's kingdom. They WILL have salvation....just from the writings of the OT.

And what about the rest of my post?

The disciples, being jews, walked by the law, for it is what they where taiugh. Jesus, The word come in the flesh:, walked by the law, it was a requiremet that he walked it in perfection, being the only one whi ever could, Jesus died, to end it all, the word of God was nailed to the cross, and there it died. We are not under the law, but grace, if you thnk you are better then Jesus, then try and keep the law, but it must be to the letter., and if you do, it is by the law you will be judged, and being a sinner, you will be found wanting. Isnt grace the better option, or was not Christs sacrifice enough for you that you would like to add to the price.

In His LOve

Oh nad the disciples after Jesus rose, where led by the spirirt, not by books or men, which is why they did wonderfull things and we keep failing.

Jesus read from Isaiah in his home Synagogue.
He read the prophecy of a Savior who woul deliver them and then told them flat out that that prophecy has been fulfilled in Him.

As long as you are including yourself in that assumption.

ALWAYS!!! God's word is quite a bit to consume. People are always bringing scriptures that I have missed or was not aware of.

There is a lot for ALL to learn, myself included!
