The Westminster Catechism, Short Version, begins:

Q: What is the chief end of man?
A: Man’s chief end is to glory God, and to enjoy Him forever.

What exactly does this mean? Glorify God?

The two great commandments are to love the Lord your God . . . And to love your neighbor like yourself.

If we demonstrate our love for God by loving our neighbor (kind, caring, gentle, loving . . . ), is that just a different way of stating the Catechism?

I would say that the glorification of God comes from self sacrifice.

Hmmmm, i perceive to Glorify GOD is to obey the Will of GOD~ And what is the Will of GOD? The Divine Decalogue. And to be clear for those thinking they are aligned with following the Ten Commandments,,, there is only one that begins with “Remember”,,, the main One that appears to have been “Forgotten”,,, Love and Peace Sisters and Brothers~

You can’t Glorify God without the Spirit.

You must be Born of the Spirit to Glorify God.

The Spirit Promised to Glorify Jesus

"When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all the truth…He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare itto you"…Now we have received…the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.(John 16:13-14 and 1 Corinthians 2:12)
The promised teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit guides us into all the truths of the word of God. "When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all the truth." As the Spirit fulfills this promise, He especially wants to unfold God's truth in ways that will glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you." The desire of the Holy Spirit is to bring glory and honor, not to Himself, but to the Lord Jesus Christ. "But when the Helpercomes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me" (John 15:26).

New International Version
You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

New Living Translation
But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.)

English Standard Version
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.

Berean Standard Bible
You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ

I think glorifying God means to acknowledge what he is doing.

The glorification of God always falls under self sacrifice. God's will is to give life. If we are giving ourselves to other people then we are glorifying God through our actions. "Actions" is a very important word as we cannot glorify God without them. We can be present in our heart and our mind but no "glorification" will come without action.

Glorifying God is highlighting his characteristics in what we think, say and do......and what are the characteristics which give him glory?
If our God is self sacrificing and we have embraced this, the processes within us (thinking, saying, doing) will reflect it.
If one believes God is violent, and one thinks, says and does violence, does this glorify God?

As far as our actions go, do we plot our own course, or does the Lord plot out a course for us?

I tink there are various ways to glorify God.

Worshipping Him is glorifying Him, prayer is glorifying Hin, Thanksgiving and Praising Him glorifies Him, Telling our Testimonies to others glorifies Him. Being obedient to Him Glorifys Him!

The way to glorify God is by testifying about aspects of His character. For example, our good works testify about God's goodness, which is why they bring glory to Him (Matthew 5:16).

Shouldn't we be following him?
Interesting! Thank you for your question.

If we are totally (joyfully) obedient to God, are we mere robots?

well, Perhaps, if God were a micromanager.

(Surely, instead, He is a masterful strategist, inspiring a shared vision, enabling us to act, encouraging the heart, . . ., but like a model executive, leaving the tactical details up to us.)

Examples: Book of Jonah. Jonah initially disobeys God and experiences a devastating consequence. God gives Jonah a second chance (!), but the details of his “ministry” in Nineveh are his to work out.

Another: the Apostle Paul, a dutiful follower after his conversion, but exercising free will in his ministry.

No, we aren't robots. The Lord gives us fun things to do.

Doesn't he have one planned for us that would bring us the most fulfillment?
He has given us autonomy....we can choose our destiny. God didn't force/ override the ability he gave Adam to choose whether to believe the Serpents lie in the Garden. He warned him of the consequences but left the choice to him.
