A human's soul descends to She'ol and becomes unconscious until the end of days when everyone will rise up and be judged.

I hope to die in a state of grace.
I was baptized Roman Catholic, but was forced into Islam, then was basically a heathen (Occultist, Buddhist, "atheist"), and I have struggled a long time to really understand Christianity--I'm understanding it more and more as I pray about the Bible and am put through different fires.

A good example is in Luke 16 where the rich man lifted his eyes in hell, and Lazarus went to Abraham's bosom.
Of course, Jesus set free the captives in Paradise and as someone else has already said, "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord", the soul now goes directly to heaven.
But Hades is still in full operation continuously enlarging itself for the unsaved, waiting to be judged, as someone else has already stated.
Just for the record, I do not believe Abraham's Bosom was 'emptied out' as some are told. Abraham was not some evil tyrant that kept prisoners.
Oh and Hell is a 'Her' BTW...
Isaiah 5:14
"Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it."

We are told in scripture that the rich man looked over and saw Lazarus in Abraham's bosom, and there was a great gulf between them where one could not enter back and forth.
Theologians say that hades, burning side of hell, and paradise, where the saved were kept and could not enter heaven because the sin debt by man had not yet been paid by Christ, were side by side.
When Christ went down to hell before his resurrection, as Paul tells us, "he set the captives free." he also won the victory over Satan forever in His death and resurrection, taking the keys of death, hell, and the grave from him.
All that were in paradise went to heaven at this point and all who die the physical death in Christ will go directly to heaven.
I agree with @Charlie24 there are two destinations discussed int the bible, paradise and hell. Luke 16:22-23

I believe that Great Gulf is our Universe. The Sea of Glass is the barrier between the Higher Worlds...
Revelation 15:2
"And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God."
The Deep Abyss is the barrier between the Lower 'Under' Worlds.
The 'Theologians' have made a terrible mistake by assuming they know what 'Heart of the Earth' means. They got it wrong. Very wrong.
Jesus went to a place called 'Lower Parts of the Earth'...
Ephesians 4:9
"Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?"
What exactly is that? Here...
Psalms 139:15
"My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth."
According to the above verse, Hell is the place where Babies are made. More specifically, Babies are made in the Tabernacle Ovum.

"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"
Jesus went to the Most Holy Place of the Tabernacle (Heart of the Earth) to sprinkle the Blood. In other words, Jesus fertilized the Ark (Nucleolus) to become Born Again...
The entire Human Race are the Captives. Jesus made us free.
Did Jesus 'take' the Keys, or were they given to him?

"And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open."
Which Heaven? The Third Heaven?
The Throne Room in the Book of Revelation is Abraham's Bosom, i.e. Paradise, i.e. the Third Heaven, i.e. the Kingdom of God Within...
The spiritual aspect of scripture is escaping you, Base!
One must think spiritual when reading the words of Christ, if not, you will miss His message every time.
My view is at the end of the book of Revelation after Jesus Christ death and resurrection ~ (Revelation 22) ~ I believe unbelievers go outside the kingdom of heaven, and believers go inside the kingdom of heavenly Jerusalem.
I think, and I'm not really versed, people think that is after the judgment and resurrection. But before we are resurrected it is Abrahams bosom or hell.

When Jesus Christ died on the cross He went to these places, even proclaiming a message to the souls that had been preserved since the day of Noah which were killed off by God. Not sure what Jesus Christ came to proclaim to them; but however Jesus Christ 3 days later is resurrected and overcame the place of she'ol.
Believe later on in the white throne judgement; all of the people that were in she'ol previously were all given up from their place of she'ol, and were all judged accordingly. After all of this near the end of the Revelation it seems believers are going into the Kingdom of God, while those who are without God; are placed on the outside of the Kingdom.

Those pictures are interesting.
K, I believe differently and think there will be a resurrection of the dead when Christ comes the second time to save humanity from evil.
