3 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life. - 2 Corinthians 3:6.
15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. - Hebrews 9:15.
Do you know what was finished at the cross? Man doing anything in himself to save himself. We had a gospel (Old Testament dispensations including law) that has a person doing to be, doing to be obedient or whatever that dispensation required for a relationship with God. Israel could not put down the law, it is the only way they could have a relationship with God. Gentiles as well if they wanted to be adopted into Israel's way of doing to be obedient. Israel was in perfect compliance with what was required at the time, but the time was changing, New Testament was being put in place and it would have to be acted on as well just as the Old Testament was acted on in obedience to the law. Grace would be another dispensation to which God would handle mankind. In this dispensation man would have to believe the finished work of God to have a relationship with God, or the scriptures call it Born Again.
What is a dispensation? A dispensation is the way God handles people according to that age of time. Something he has put in place and must be adhered to. In Grace you must be born again, all other means of having a relationship with God have been done away with and replaced by a new dispensation called grace. Believers have to really let that roll around in them to know what God is doing.
The first dispensation was Innocence - Adam and Eve were handled by the innocence of their creation. Could be called the Adamic dispensation or covenant.
The second dispensation is Conscience – From the fall to the great flood. Man was left to their own conscience to have a relationship with God.
The third is Human Hovernment – After the great flood, humanity is responsible to enact the death penalty. Ends with the dispersion at the Tower of Babel. Some use the term Noahide law in reference to this period of dispensation.
The fourth is Promise – From Abraham to Moses. Ends with the refusal to enter Canaan and the 40 years of unbelief in the wilderness. Some use the terms Abrahamic law or Abrahamic covenant in reference to this period of dispensation.
The fifth is law – From Moses to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Ends with the scattering of Israel in AD70. Some use the term Mosaic law in reference to this period of dispensation.
The sixth is Grace - From the cross to the rapture of the church. The rapture is followed by the wrath of God constituting the Great Tribulation. Some use the term Age of Grace or the Church Age for this dispensation.
The seventh is Millennial Kingdom – A 1000 year reign of Christ on earth centered in Jerusalem, ending with God's judgment on the final rebellion.
It varies on how many dispensations depending on who you are listening to some say more some say less. But the point is made; that is how God would deal with mankind, how he handled them at that time. It is based on how he set it up.
