Eph. 6:13 - Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand (withstand, KJV) your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

It is my opinion, that this verse contains a warning regarding the evil day that will be called the Great Tribulation, as described in Rev.12:17 and 13:7-10. There are three acceptable theories as to the meaning of this verse. I believe theories #1 & #3 to hold the most truth.

1. Compared to heaven, all our days are evil and thus we need the armor for daily living.

2. This is meant only for those times when we are in a spiritual conflict; battling sin, diseases, etc.

3. By using "the" it is talking about a special, future prophetic time.

This third aspect is the one I‘m going to focus on today. Looking at it from this perspective there are some biblical truths that need to be pointed out. By utilizing the word "withstand", Paul is shutting out all hope that we will escape this event. We will have no choice but to withstand. The only choice left to you is whether you will be armed or unarmed for that day. Our victory is assured if we are armed, but not if we forsake this opportunity. It is also possible that this alludes to the "hour of trial" from Rev. 3:10 - Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth.

While we are withstanding, (enduring patiently) Jesus promises to "keep" (to guard against, as in keeping an eye on to protect from danger) us "from" (keep away, protect us from danger in the midst of adversity). This does not say He will "take us away from" as most pre-tribulation theorists try to read into this verse. Therefore we have three inescapable truths.

1.) There will be a day of evil.
Going back to one of our previous discussions concerning God#‘s creation of evil. I still don#‘t believe that God creates evil, in the way we understand that to mean. I believe that what He does is, appropriate evil for Himself from satan and of course we are not talking of evil in its moral or intrinsic sense. He appropriates evil so we can know that no one can do evil upon His own except Him or w/o His permission. Evil in this case means afflictions. We are to choose this type of evil, as exampled by Moses, knowing He will see us through, rather than the type of evil from which sin results. Heb. 11:25 - Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. The evil that God appropriates has a purpose. It is not evil in and of itself. Since God is pure and cannot send or create evil, He utilizes Satan‘s evil to accomplish His purposes. God uses the afflictions of evil to create joy in the believer. Rom. 5:3 - Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings...

When we undergo these trials, it helps us to remember the sinfulness of our past, and makes us aware of the dark parts that still reside within us. This "day of evil" will reveal the falseness of the hypocrite. We may find that our corruption is stronger and our grace weaker then we had presumed. Thus the need to be "purified as though with fire". For the sinner, as the plagues of Moses caused Pharoah’s heart to harden, so in the evil day, it will cause the heart of man to harden. Rev. 9:20-21 - The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk. Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.

2.) It is unavoidable.
That some believers consider themselves immune from this day is hardly surprising. As history began with the free choice of Adam to partake of the fruit, so will it end with humanity choosing, "this day whom they will serve". Christ won the war on the cross but Satan battles on to steal as many souls away from God as he can.

3.) It behooves us to prepare for this evil day.
It is our duty as servants of Christ to prepare to our utmost for this final battle. Failure to prepare will border on treason against our most faithful God. The servant in Matt. 24:45-50, had to be found doing his "good works" in order to get his reward. Now I am not saying that salvation is dependant on works, but works are part of our responsibility to God for so great a salvation.

While we are over the beasts concerning the possession of a rational soul, they excel in one way or another over our individual senses. As we exercise our sixth spiritual sense, we must also exercise our five physical senses per these scriptures:
Matt. 13:16 - But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear.
Phil. 4:18 - an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. Our gifts and sacrifices are a sweet smelling fragrance to God.
Ps. 34:8 - Taste and see that the LORD is good...

In Matt. 9:21, the woman knew that if she could just touch the hem of his garment she would be healed.
Men and women of the world may seem to excel in this life more than believers do, but it is only temporary. They will be resurrected to judgment, while we will be resurrected to eternal life because we exercised our spiritual sense while they neglected theirs. Preparation for the evil day must be placed high on our list of priorities so that its arrival won#‘t catch us sleeping. 1 Thess. 5:6 - So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. We do not know what types of evil shall befall us personally so it is best to be prepared for all things. What good is it to have on hand much wood to be burned to keep us warm if we have no matches with which to light the fire. Things that are done in a hurry are seldom done well. In this way, it is better to have our armor ready and well polished, then to try and repair it when the battle comes.

There are five ways a believer can fail to prepare for the "day of evil".

1. They realize they are so unprepared that they won’t even let the thought of facing it cross their minds through fear of it.
For some, it is so unthinkable that they might be here to face it, they immediately quash any thoughts they may have about it. However, the banishing of this period from their thoughts will be a short relief for they can neither hinder its arrival nor take away its sting when it arrives. They act like babies who cover their eyes and believe that because they can see no one, no one can see them.

2. They believe that the "day" is so far off, it has no concern for them.
They see the "day" as they would a cannon. They know if they are right in front of it, it will blow them to bits but if they stand a lot farther away; they feel they are free from danger even though they remain within its range of fire. The further away we see this day of evil the less of an impression it makes on us. It#‘s like a sinner who believes he has many years to go before his death and waits to repent. When death comes earlier then expected, they are unprepared to face God‘s judgment.

3. They think often of the evil day but they continue on, trusting in luck to see them through.
Despite all the warnings, they continue in their sin desperately, as if trying to get as much in as possible. They, instead of arming themselves against the evil day, arm the evil day against themselves.

4. They are aware of the evil day but "rest" in their unarmed condition, expecting the Lord to fight the battle for them.
They ignore Eph. 6:12 - For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

5. They ready their defenses and put on the armor but fail to arm themselves with the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God".
While they have prepared adequate defenses against the fiery arrows of the devil, the attack is endless because they possess no weapon to drive the devil away.

Here are some ways we can successfully prepare for the "day of evil".
1. Make sure you‘re in a right relationship with God.
Build a solid foundation of faith and overcome the sin in your life so you can await the day of evil with confidence.

2. Be ready to give up the comfort and ease of your present life style.
We must be willing to accept whatever God desires for us, even if it means uprooting ourselves from our homes and communities to become missionaries for Him. As Paul did, we have to "die daily", to the pleasures of this world, that we may be better prepared for the next.

3. We must obey the admonition of Rom. 12:1-2.
Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.
The more our life has been tainted by hypocrisy or unfaithfulness, the weaker we will be when the day of evil arrives. Familiarize yourself with the facts of the evil day so that its arrival won‘t catch you unawares.

I realize that many of you will feel all this is unnecessary but I just ask that you ponder it awhile and if you still feel it doesn’t concern you then just remember the spirit of good will in which it is offered.

The church needs the armor everyday. We tend to loose sight of the whole church and think we in the U.S. are the standard by which to measure. While our worst enemy is complacency, most of the church faces active pursecution.

A time of tribulation like no other on earth before, nor another time like it on earth ever again, ought to be understood as that "evil day" Paul was speaking about. He would not have admonished the brethren to 'withstand' that evil day if he didn't know we'd be here on earth to go through it, like our Lord Jesus showed.

There are a couple of things of which I am sensing you are not aware: First, you need to understand that the word "evil" here is not the Greek word "kakos" but is "poneeros." Strong's is a little confusing about these two terms, unless you use their definitions together (with "sapros," as well):

NT:4190 poneeros (pon-ay-ros'); from a derivative of NT:4192; hurtful, i.e. evil (properly, in effect or influence, and thus differing from NT:2556, which refers rather to essential character, as well as from NT:4550, which indicates degeneracy from original virtue); figuratively, calamitous; also (passively) ill, i.e. diseased; but especially (morally) culpable, i.e. derelict, vicious, facinorous; neuter (singular) mischief, malice, or (plural) guilt; masculine (singular) the devil, or (plural) sinners:
KJV - bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious, wicked (-ness). See also NT:4191.

NT:4191 poneeroteros (pon-ay-rot'-er-os); comparative of NT:4190; more evil:
KJV - more wicked.

NT:4192 ponos (pon'-os); from the base of NT:3993; toil, i.e. (by implication) anguish:
KJV - pain.

NT:2556 kakos (kak-os'); apparently a primary word; worthless (intrinsically, such; whereas NT:4190 properly refers to effects), i.e. (subjectively) depraved, or (objectively) injurious:
KJV - bad, evil, harm, ill, noisome, wicked.

NT:4550 sapros (sap-ros'); from NT:4595; rotten, i.e. worthless (literally or morally):
KJV - bad, corrupt. Compare NT:4190.

(Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. Copyright © 1994, 2003, 2006 Biblesoft, Inc. and International Bible Translators, Inc.)

So, "poneeros" does not mean "depraved," "injurious," or "worthless," or "rotten." It is not a day that is INTRISICALLY EVIL!
It means "burdensome," "calamitous," "hurtful," "diseased," "ill," for one being "morally culpable" or "morally blameworthy" or "morally guilty!" It's just a VERY BAD DAY!

Now, let's look at the verse itself in the Greek:

Ephesians 6 13
13 Dia touto analabete teen panoplian tou Theou hina duneetheete
antisteenai en tee heemera tee poneera kai hapanta katergasamenoi steenai.
Greek New Testament

13 Dia = 13 Through
touto = this-thing
analabete = you-take-up-to-yourselves
teen = the
panoplian = "panoply"/complete-gear
tou = of-the
Theou, = God,
hina = so-that
duneetheete = you-may-be-able
antisteenai = to-stand-against
en = in
tee = the
heemera = day
tee = the
poneera = evil
kai = and
hapanta = all-things/everything
katergasamenoi = having-completed/having-completely-accomplished
steenai. = to-stand.

13 Through this-thing you-take-up-to-yourselves the "panoply"/complete-gear of-the God, so-that you-may-be-able to-stand-against in the day the evil and all-things/everything having-completed/having-completely-accomplished to-stand.

13 Through this, take up to yourselves God's complete gear, so that you may be able to stand against the evil (calamity) in the day and having completely accomplished all things, to stand.

Therefore, this verse is not talking about a SPECIFIC day in the future; it is talking about ANY BAD DAY that comes along! It's talking about being equipped to handle whatever comes whenever it comes!

The second thing of which I think you are unaware is found in this statement: "Going back to one of our previous discussions concerning God‘s creation of evil. I still don‘t believe that God creates evil, in the way we understand that to mean. I believe that what He does is, appropriate evil for Himself from satan and of course we are not talking of evil in its moral or intrinsic sense. He appropriates evil so we can know that no one can do evil upon His own except [by] Him [that is, by His leave] or w/o His permission." (Please correct me if I've misunderstood anything in repeating these words as I THINK you meant them.)

Using the Greek words above, God does not create "kakos"; however, He CERTAINLY DOES create "poneeros!" It's the difference between cause and effect: God does not "create evil" in the sense of CAUSING evil to exist; He "creates evil" in the sense of reacting to the evil in humanity! He CREATES THE BAD DAY due to one's sinfulness! He creates the RESULTS OF PUNISHMENT FOR the sins! And, it may not be against any one person in particular! He may just be creating "bad days" because sin is in the world generically speaking! We are reaping the ACCUMULATED results of decay, death, and destruction BECAUSE of ALL SIN, from Adam's and Chavah's first disobedience to the last lie told today! For, "the wages of sin is death." This is what is meant in Isaiah 45:7:

Isaiah 45:7
7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
KJV

Subsequent to this understanding, you also need to understand more fully that haSatan has NO power compared to God Almighty! The Oriental concept of Yin and Yang seemed to somehow surface in the Dark Ages among those who called themselves "Christian." The dichotomies of "Heaven and Hell," "Good and Evil," "God and Satan," "Angels and Demons," etc. are NOT to be found as such in the Scriptures! That's the Yin/Yang mysticism that somehow snuck into the "church," either through the paganism around them, from the actual excursions to the East, or from the original imaginations and machinations among them.

God is absolutely righteous; He is the EPITOME of goodness!

Matthew 19:17
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
KJV

Mark 10:18
18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
KJV

Luke 18:19
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
KJV

1 John 1:5
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
KJV

1 John 3:5
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
KJV

Sin is the HOLE in the "doughnut" of righteousness! It's the ABSENCE of righteousness! It's the LACK of righteousness! Therefore, specifically, abuse is the ABSENCE of selfless love! A hurtful lie is the ABSENCE of truth! And so on! Anything that is intrinsically evil is the ABSENCE of some attribute of God!

With everything else you said I pretty much agree, but only as they are qualified by these two points.

Trekson,

Thanks for the invite on this discussion. Here are my thoughts on some of your comments here...

First, I agree with you that Christians should be prepared to deal with evil and temptation that confronts them. I think you have some good points about this and the importance of growing to be prepared against such attacks and tests. I think the book of 2 Peter speaks to this issue as well in reference to the false teachers who lead people astray. Peter encourages us to be "established in the truth."

Next, I disagree with point 3 that this has any reference to an end times scenario. I think the definite article here points to the fact that specific days will come that will be major tests to a persons fidelity to Christ. Specifically, Paul may have in mind a day when some Christians will be killed for their faith. This is likely what Paul has in mind as an "ambassador in chains." I think the context here makes it clear that these are present evil days that Paul is referencing (see Eph. 5:16) and is not related to some future time of Tribulation. Paul is currently in prison and in danger of having his head removed for his faith in Christ. I think the tribulation he and others were facing was as strong as it gets....there is no greater thing you can lose for Christ than your life. Paul and many others paid this price for their faith. They did not renounce Christ. See the martyrdom of Polycarp if you want an inspiring story of a man who stood strong in the day of evil.

Again, I think most of what you have written here is good and is on target. We need to be ready and prepared to face the trials we will all face if we are obedient and faithful to Jesus. Paul's instruction helps them and us to be prepared for the challenges we will face and to stand up to them through prayer and confidence in the word and works of God in Jesus Christ.

Be blessed brother.

Old Jack subscribing...big deal! In the mean time God did not create evil...secondly only a head's up when it says in Eph. "God deliver us from evil," ie, how is this done? Have some more, however need to open up the Good Book when I get back home.

13 Dia = 13 Through
touto = this-thing
analabete = you-take-up-to-yourselves
teen = the
panoplian = "panoply"/complete-gear
tou = of-the
Theou, = God,
hina = so-that
duneetheete = you-may-be-able
antisteenai = to-stand-against
en = in
tee = the
heemera = day
tee = the
poneera = evil
kai = and
hapanta = all-things/everything
katergasamenoi = having-completed/having-completely-accomplished
steenai. = to-stand.

Nice post....

The problem with all these things is a logical disconnect between the American reader and all the different iterations and updates to prophetic interpretations.

At present, America is the chief terrorist nation at work in the Levant. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was quoted in 1966 as saying that, "the United States is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world." That assessment hasn't changed in nearly fifty years. In fact, it has become worse. America now invades nations at will, bombs anywhere and any time it wishes. At least six nations are presently victims of US drone attacks, some of them our allies.

Why is all this happening?

American fascist interests are concerned with expanding and holding financial hegemony. Despite the efforts of the ruling oligarchs we were warned about by outgoing President Eisenhower in 1961 (*), American international influence is eroding. Despite this warning the grip of fascism seized the US and on Oct. 26, 2001 the republic was ended by vote of congress.

In 1979, the American intelligence community wed itself with the financial power of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the nation of Iran, a client state of ours at the time. The purpose was to illegally finance and orchestrate terrorists in Nicaragua called the Contras. The conflict in Central America ended badly for America, but the intelligence community ties with KSA grew stronger. The pattern has been repeated and expanded over and over again since that time.

Entry of the US military into the affairs of the Levant began following the invasion of Kuwait by Sadam Hussein, who had been goaded into the attack by then American ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie. It provided an easy excuse for America to begin the supporting moves desired by KSA into Iraq and beyond. The ultimate purpose for this unholy alliance is to spread Sunni sharia law and political influence throughout North Africa and the Middle East. In Muslim parlance, the goal is to reestablish the caliphate of the old Ottoman Empire. American blood and resources are being used to further these ends. American fascist leadership is now in league with the agents of satan itself.

IF GOD DOES NOT JUDGE AMERICA, HE WILL HAVE TO APOLOGIZE TO SODOM AND GOMORRAH.

and that's just me, hollering from the choir loft....

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence economic, political, even spiritual is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals so that security and liberty may prosper together.
