[6] If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not live according to the truth;
[7] but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:6-7 RSV
I'll show how to understand a part of this verse, that can help a person who is trying to understand the Blood Atonement.
We understand that Jesus died for the sin of the world, and this Salvation, is received, and we are born again.
We have become "the righteousness of God, in Christ".
So, if are the righteousness of God, then we are not "sinners"......as you can't be both.
But then, you read a verse that says..... If we walk in the light we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son, cleanses us from All sin.
Well notice. On the day you call on Jesus, by faith, believing, had you been previously in fellowship with other believers, walking in the Light?
No, you were in sin, and enjoying it.
So, how then, to understand that verse, as it SEEMS to be saying that if we walk in the LIGHT, THEN we are made clean...
But that is not the case, as we were not walking in the LIGHT, the day before or the years before we were saved., and yet we were MADE RIGHTEOUS, the very instant we BELIEVED IN JESUS.......
See that?
So, when you read this.... ""but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.""""
Simply do this.. so that the verse can be rightly divided.
"""but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another"".
Now, start a new sentence.. that is a new thought, and in this way, that Comma, does not connect what is a different thought.
"and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."
So now the verse is 2 parts, and rightly divided.
1.) walk in light, = have fellowship
2.) the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.
