Today's devotional reading covered Ex 14. In v 13-15, YHWH says both, to stand firm (stand still) and go forward. How to make sense of this?

Stand firm has the meaning of stand ones ground, not wander off, but it can also mean be committed to your course of action.
Here the isrealites were ready to give up.The command to stand firm was not to stop moving but to stay committed to God.

"Stand still" and "stand firm" do not mean the same thing. "Stand still" means "do not move." "Stand firm" means "maintain your convictions."
