God is One and Triune: God the Thought (Father), God the Word (Son), and God the Holy Spirit. But only God the Word became human, while remaining divine. So when Christians say Mary was the Mother of God, they are acknowledging and accepting Scripture where it states:
- Mary conceived and gave birth to God the Word Incarnate: Jesus.
- Jesus is the eternal Word who is God and became flesh: John 1:1, 14.
- Mary conceived Jesus and gave birth to Him: Luke 1:31; Luke 2:6-7.
- Elizabeth called Mary "mother of my Lord."
- Luke 1:43: “And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”
- Mary is called Jesus's Mother.
- John 2:1 (“the mother of Jesus was there”)
- Acts 1:14 (“Mary the mother of Jesus”)
- Jesus is called Mary's Son.
- Luke 1:31-32 (Mary will bear a son)
- Galatians 4:4 (“God sent forth his Son, born of a woman.”)
- Jesus is called the fruit of Mary's womb.
- Luke 1:42: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”
- Jesus is called God.
- John 1:1 (“the Word was God”)
- John 20:28 (“My Lord and my God!”)
- Titus 2:13 (“our great God and Savior Jesus Christ”)
- Hebrews 1:8 (“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever.”)
Mary the Mother of God = Mother of specifically God the Word Incarnate. It is not only a statement about Mary, but also of Who Jesus is.
Do you reject where Scripture states God the Word became incarnate as a human, was born of Mary, and named "Jesus"?
