Well, taking prescribed medicine usually beats suffering from the symptoms of the illness they are prescribed to manage or cure.

And I hate to quote it, because for so many it is the only scripture they know... So here it goes...

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. - 1 Timothy 5:23

Well, let us put it this way...God gave us doctors to help us when we are sick. My wife has asthma and takes a prescription inhaler. I think that is a little different, but I am sure that there is a natural remedy for asthma out there. I know many people who are pill poppers because they are (in my opinion) paranoid about whats wrong with them. Nature can cure a lot of things by just taking vitamins and natural supplements on a daily basis. They are cheaper than prescription drugs anyways.

"They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover."
Mar 16:18

The use of prescription drugs should be according to a physicians direction and for the treatment of disease. The actual use of poison such as chemotherapy for cancer patients may be a fulfillment of prophecy as well as a sound and effective medical treatment. My wife took it and I'm glad she's still with me.

On the other hand the illegal use and sale of prescription drugs borders on criminal behaviour. Participation in this activity by a Christian should be forbidden.

God has revealed things to man over time.
Some of them are great (at least to us) scientific discoveries.

If a person is sick and can be made better by prescription drugs, where would God have an issue with that?

Those that do not seek medical attention that could save their son or daughter because they want to trust God are missing the point that God allowed the discoveries to be made in order to help that person's son or daughter.

Reminds me of a story I shared before:

A man lived in a flood zone and it had been raining for several days straight.

A local policeman stopped at his house to warn him that flood are coming within the next day and he would be glad to move the man to safety. The man said, "No thanks, the Lord will deliver me in my hour of need." The policeman drove away.

As the flooding reached the street outside his house his neighbors, themselves leaving, offered to take him to safety.
The man said, "No thanks, the Lord will deliver me in my hour of need." The neighbors drove away.

As the flooding reached the first floor of his house, a sheriff's department deputy drove up in a boat and offered to take him to safety.
The man said, "No thanks, the Lord will deliver me in my hour of need." The deputy drove away in his boat.

The water continue to rise and soon the man was sitting on his roof, the only dry place he could fine.
A National Guard helicopter came overhead and a soldier was lowed down to the man. The soldier said they were there to rescue him because soon his house would flooded over.
The man said, "No thanks, the Lord will deliver me in my hour of need." The soldier was lifted back up to the helicopter and it flew away.

Within hours the water submerged the house and the man drown.

When the man stood before Jesus he rather frustratingly said, "Lord why did you not deliver me in my hour of need?"

The Lord replied, "I did try. I sent the police, your neighbors, the sheriff's deputy, the National Guard..."

-- The Lord's intervention/assistance/deliverance does not always come with the preconceived whistles, bells, angels singing, etc that some Christians feel must accompany it.

Taken wrongly a medicine can be a poison but taken responsibly it is for the benefit ot they person concerned.

As long as it is taken on doctor's orders and not misused/abused then surely there cannot be a problem.

Also, just wondering? I've heard that Jahova's Witnesses can't have blood transfusions, why is this?

Jehovah's Witnesses started their church in the 19th century. One of the hallmarks of all churches started in the 19th century is a focus on the body. Christian Science rejects medicine; Jehovah's Witnesses reject blood transfusions (they have a proof text for it, of course :) ); Mormons reject caffeine, tobacco, and a few other items; Seventh Day Adventists reject meat; Shakers rejected sex. Concern for the body was sort of in vogue during the 19th century and it was reflected in new religious practices.

Can Mormons techncially be called Christisns? Afterall they actually stipulate that Joseph Smith has done more for humanity than jesus. Don't get me wrong I have nothing but respect for Mormons but I find that belief does'nt sit well with me.

I don't personally have a problem with anyone abstaining from anything as long as they don't get preachy about it. I drink but I don't get drunk because I'm a responsible drinker and I know my limits. I've never been a smoker but I havee tried it and I don't care fot it and I have never taken recreational drugs and never will.

No. Mormons are not Christian since they deny the full deity of Christ.

None of the 19th century religions I mentioned are Christian. They all deny the Trinity and follow the teachings of a false prophet.

What do you mean by "They all deny the Trinity"? Please elaborate.

I am not sure how to elaborate on this, Ducky.

None of the religions I mentioned believe in the Trinity. Mormons believe in a single God who is married to another goddess

JWs deny Christ as God

Adventists believe in a Godhead, but not a Trinity

and Christian Science believe in a force - God is not even a personage to them.

Shakers also believe in a force - according to the prophetess, Ann

If I am wrong, please correct me.

Not trying to correct you, just to understand what you meant. Shakers? Is that like Quakers?

Yeah, Shakers are really interesting! They are an offshoot of the Quakers.

Look them up - they were the fastest growing religion between 1830 and 1850 in the US. They totally shunned sex - even between married couples. Obviously they ended up dying out. But, not before they emancipated hundreds of slaves from the South, whom they adopted and then freed when they were 21. Ken Burns did a fascinating documentary on the Shakers on PBS - check it out.

Thanks Aspen. Reason I asked is that I had a friend who was a Quaker.

Quakers are really interesting - half of them have ministers and the other half do not. Be careful before you make up your mind about them.......I admit that I really have not studied them enough to know where they stand.

I am still learning about them.

I thought the Mormons had God, Jesus and Joseph Smith as their Trinity.

Has anyone ver read up on qwhat Mormons believe about the afterlife. It's very bizarre.
