Romans 8:1-2 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. (NIV)

So what does it mean to be in Christ Jesus? The Sinner's prayer? Baptism? Picking up your Cross daily?

Cool question... I was just thinking about the Passover and posted a question about it that was kind of relative to this.

For me it means I quit trusting in myself that I'm righteous and believe that I'm in Him and He's become my righteousness... the effect of this understanding causes me to stop despising others because I realize we're all in the same boat... saved sinners thanks to His blood... which is why we recognize all the Glory for our righteousness belongs to Him because it's all His Power that made it possible.

That's my opinion/belief...

I really like your response! I agree with you - it involves a reframing of our relationship to God, creation and people - we are in it together!

These are rich passages in Romans. They were some of my favorites as a new christian 25 years ago.

To me "in Christ Jesus" refers to the fact that we live by the Spirit , not by the the law , and we are no longer condemned for breaking the law . Not being condemned is the same as saying "not guilty" if we sin (break the law) on occasion. I always found it released guilt, and allowed me to try again and do better . Guilt can be a burden that can distract us.

Back around Romans 7:8-9 it says that the law produces every kind of covetous desire , and sin seizes the opportunity to remind us (guilt) (condemnation) that sin will bring us death. The law cannot save us.

Jesus came and released us from this death sentence (the law we cannot keep) by giving us life through the Spirit instead.

I probably explained it poorly , but like I said , these are rich passages that you almost have to start a couple of chapters back and read several times to really grasp it all.

Mostly I always remember there is no guilt (condemnation) for us in Christ. Even with our imperfections, the law has no condemnation over us. Often we forget this sometimes as Christians.

I always find it refreshing to remind myself that The Spirit Jesus gave us brings life and peace . ( Romans 8:6 )

.

I like several things that you said - no condemnation meaning "not guilty" under the law and how guilt can really get in the way [of sanctification].

I tend to believe that we are still under the law, but instead of being condemned by it - Jesus clarified that the sum of the law is love, not death. The Pharisees forgot the love part - they were misusing the law to control people through guilt and shame and condemnation. Jesus reminded them that the law was created for us (Sabbath) not us for the law. Jesus paid the price for the penalty of the law and now we are free to live by it and love by it without fear and guilt.

This thing of being "in Christ" or "in the name" is perhaps one of the most important, if not the most important thing for a person to understand. I remember the now very old argument between oneness people and trinitarians as to which words should be pronounced aloud by a person performing a water baptism "in the name of Jesus [Acts2:38] or "in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost" [Matt 28:19]. What words would we suppose that John the Baptist used when he was baptizing Jesus?

Many people say that it is Jesus and they are correct, but it is much more than the 5 letter English word [or any other language's designated word for it including the languages of the original writings.]

"The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into
and is safe." Prov 18:10

"And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is
called The Word of God." Rev 19:13

“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Col 3:17
.
To do all in the name of Jesus is it necessary to speak the name with our every action? If we do everything in His Spirit, are we not then doing everything in His name even if we do not so much as open our mouth?

This old thread brought to my mind a recent mention by someone about being "in Him".

Being "in His name" is not so simple as saying His name, is it? Who knows His Name? How does one get into His name? Consider again the questions in the OP.

A very good question whose proper answer most fail at.
Many people believe that all that is needed to be saved and in Christ as part of the body is to simply believe in him but, scripture does not reveal it that way;

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked......
29 If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.

Belief (as it is understood by our English translation) alone is not all that we must do to be part of the body of Christ.
The verses above were given to a people after Christ was risen. Sin still exists and sin is still the disobeying of Gods will and it will keep you from being part of his body if you persist in it.
The mosaic law given to the Jew's was intended as a tutor to children to help them understand God and see how they had strayed from being like him. When God gave us his Son he intended that we would listen to him and he as God's Son would;
Isaiah 42:21.....he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.

And Christ did exactly that he magnified the law... He took it from being some simplistic outward performance and showed us that no outward performance of God's will could be traded for eternal life. Christ showed us that his Fathers law must be in our very heart. He showed us that each of the old mosaic laws had a higher intent than simply outward performance when he said"
Matt 5:27Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 28But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

We are not under an old mosaic law of outward appearances, we are now under the new intent of law given by Christ which must exist in our heart.;

Isaiah 51:7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

Christ states plainly who his people are;

Mark 3:33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? 34And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! 35For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.

For those who may feel like arguing my point tell me, which of the original commandments given to the Jews would not be contained within the two commandments shown below that Christ stated;

Matthew 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

To me it speaks of identity.
When the Enemy comes sniffing around, a Christian who knows for sure and does not waver..can say..' I am in Christ. His, hidden, one with...'
If Adam and Eve had known that truth in the Spirit, of who they were and where they sat, it would have been no contest when Satan said- " Hath God said...?"
Jesus knew just who He was during the temptation...He knew He was hidden in the Father and one with Him.
How many times ( if we are honest) does Satan come sniffing around and challenging, ( like Goliath) and we look over our shoulder thinking .."is he talking to me." For a little short while we forget just who we are "In Christ." It is our position, our life, our protection , and our future homecoming.
Young David knew just who he was when he faced his Goliath.

What I see is that at times we slip out of Christ, by quenching the Holy Spirit in us. As we grow in God and overcome finally and completely each thing that stands between us and God or comes against us in our walk toward God, the frequency of such slips should decrease. This is why I go back often to the words of John the Baptist:

"He must increase, but I must decrease." John 3:30

The "He" is the new man in us, while the "I" in the opposing old man that stills is striving to regain that complete control that he had before we met the Master. If we continuous surrender to God, eventually the old man and his devices will finally and completely destroyed. We will be the overcomer eligible to receive all that is promised to overcomers in Revelation chapters 2 and 3.

Being in Christ is to think of yourself as Jesus thought of Himself and to not live beneath yourself.

Philippians 2:6 Colossians 3:17.

Phillippians 2:5,6 and Colossians 3:17.
Yes, what Jesus did what the Apostle Paul was stated in this verse.

"Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Phil 2:3

And then also what Jesus himself expressed here:

"If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.
For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you." John 13:14-15

Is the only way to wash one another's feet with a towel and a bucket of water?

The Col 3:17 is also right on the point.

"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."

Give God the glory!

As I read your post, that is what my mind went to..Rev 3 before I got to the end of your post and saw you referenced the overcomers. :)
" 12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name."

Amadeus, our feet get dirty walking in this sinful world and we wash each other's feet with the water of the Word, sharing the Good News and talking about Jesus.

We all should have in our minds and hearts to become overcomers. Jesus did it and made it possible for us to do it. Whatever it takes is what we must be willing to do [remember the song?]

We all need others to encourage and support us, to make covenants with, David had Jonathan and Jonathan is our Jesus. For Jonathan's sake, David shows kindness to Mephibosheth and it is for Christ's sake we're forgiven. We all have our Goliath from time to time to overcome but because God is bound by the covenant He made with Jesus to honor our faith, Goliath can't stop us.

2 Samuel 9:1

imo if you want to manifest Christ in the world, stop talking about Jesus.

amen, those you will wish to be one day are risking their lives in schemes of peaceful resistance. They aren't seeking healings and dying of old age, see, because they usually don't make it to old age lol.
