Sabbath

Sabbath is a time of rest as we remember that our Creator called us to rest in his goodness and grace. But how does Sabbath interact with the bigger picture of the gospel? Sabbath began at the creation of the world. God declared his power and authority over time and space by resting from the work that he had done. Adam and Eve followed this same pattern of rest in the Garden of Eden. There was wholeness in Sabbath rest because it created a set-apart time. This set apart time was declaring that man is given freedom from work through God’s rest. God created this sacred space and sacred time set apart from all the rest of time in order to bring wholeness to his creation.


God next gave the people of Israel the mandate to follow Sabbath as a gift and a provision for their tangible and spiritual needs. He gave them twice as much manna in the wilderness of Sinai so they could rest on Sabbath. This was not given to the people out of a religious “saved by works” mandate, but rather meant to declare His imminence and give the people of Israel the conviction that they were set apart as a nation for something more. They were to declare the goodness of the Living God Yahweh to the rest of the nations. They were to reflect this in their daily practices and new hearts in Yahweh.


Jesus in the Sabbath

When God became flesh and dwelt among us in the form of Jesus, He kept Sabbath. In addition to keeping the Sabbath, he performed miracles on the Sabbath, and taught and preached and cast out demons on Saturday. He was designating his power over Sabbath and his authority over time, just as he had when he created the world. He was showing us what life in the age to come would look like. Today, as followers of Jesus, keeping Sabbath is a practical expression of following God’s mandate of rest as well as living as Jesus lived.


Sabbath invites us to see gospel restoration. This leads to us adjusting our schedules so that we can be restored, and then extend that life to other people so that they can be restored. We are given the hope that someday we will rest in eternity with Jesus and be forever with him. Sabbath strengthens the hope that we will be resurrected and that His promise will be true.


Sabbath in History

Jesus’ disciples, His apostles, the early church and believers for centuries have all received the gift of stepping into this seventh day sanctuary. Today, we do the same. We do not celebrate Sabbath as some religious attempt to find God through it, but rather to see His lovingkindness in it. Sabbath is a moment in time when we cease from work and rest. We lay down the cares of this world, rejoice in the beauty of sharing life with others, and consider God’s goodness in our lives. All of this is a part of the bigger gospel story that God has been telling since the beginning of time: we were created to worship Him and enjoy Him forever. Sabbath is the loving provision God gave to us to see His goodness and kindness.

This argument is a textbook case of why Paul warned Timothy to be on the lookout against people who deceitfully handle the Bible. Literally none of those passages say God changed the rest day from Saturday to Sunday.
This is human reasoning speaking, and not the Bible. God only consecrated 1 day out of the entire week to be treated holy, not all 7. Man doesn't possess any authority to decide which day is going to be holy. You should also note that Christ was specifically speaking about what was lawful to do on a Sabbath. What He didn't say was that everyday could be treated as a Sabbath. According to what God says, there is nothing inherently sacred about the other 6 days.

The sabbath was Old Testament law, and The Lord rose from the dead on the first day of the week, aka "The Lord's Day". If you refuse to see the significance in Jesus fulfilling the law and creating a new way to be a believer aka not needing to sacrifice when we sin etc then fine but Jesus's day is The Lord's Day as He is The Lord and that is the first day if the week that He rose from the dead on.

Please note that the Jews gathered together on the seventh day of the week [Saturday] and also note the term "next" in Strong's Concordance means "between" therefore, in this case, "next/between sabbaths" would mean the day after Saturday will have to mean Sunday the first day of the week.

Now the most significant and profound Scripture reference concerning the change from Saturday Sabbath to Sunday Sabbath worship [which BTW, can't be seen in the English translation] is Matthew 28:1 that reads:
"In the end of the sabbath as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher."

Please note that the printer is warning the English reader that words in italicize in the KJV Bible, are not in the original manuscripts. Also note that the word "week" is the plural Hebrew word "sabaton" that can be proven.

Hence, Matthew 28:1 can be rendered thus:
"In the end of the sabbaths as it began to dawn towards the first of the sabbaths came Mary..."

Now Matthew 28:1 seems to be in harmony and that God teaches us that He changed the Seventh Day Sabbath Worship to the First Day Sabbath which to us is Sunday.

There’s no need to explain Acts, because it’s so clear that Paul didn’t travel from city to city to attend the synagogues of the Jews just to fill a pew, but to preach to them that Jesus is their Messiah, and he had to be there when they were there to hear him, which was on the sabbath.

Just as circumcision was physical in the old covenant, but spiritual in the new, the rest for Israel was physical in the old covenant, but spiritual in the new.

Jesus is our rest 24 7 in the new covenant, Matthew 11:28-29, so now our rest, which is what sabbath means, is no longer on a ceremonial day, but is found in Jesus.

Scripture says the sabbath was just a shadow of Jesus, who is the substance.

Col 2:16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

Col 2:17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.

Note also that the two love commands which superseded the old ten, have no required day to keep at all, leaving us free to assemble together on any day we want - the apostles chose the Lords day, the first day of the week, since He rose on that day.

Assumptions my friend are assumptions. By definition, always debatable. And when you use assumptions and make them doctrine, you end up calling those who disagree with your assumptions heretics. This is a "straw man" argument. I made no mention whatsoever of refusing to accept the doctrine of new life in Christ, nor did I mention the need for sacrificing animals.

By the way, Old Testament believers were saved the same way we are.

I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)

“Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith. (Habakkuk 2:4)

The Sanctuary system was and is an object lesson. And a test of obedience.

If it's so clear, why were the Gentiles happy to wait around until the next Sabbath to hear Paul preach?

It never ceases to amaze me how folks will take ambiguous passages to warrant neglecting that which they've always neglected and preserve their lifestyle, but when they apparently have clear permission from Christ to hate their parents, they observe the fifth commandment, anyway.

As you can see, Christ says the day that belongs to Him is the Sabbath, for it was this day that He consecrated and blessed to be His:

"Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made." - Gen. 2:3

‘Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death." -

Christ was also not resurrected on Sunday as most people are taught to believe. Christ said the 1 sign He would give as proof of Him being the Messiah is that He would be dead for the same amount of time that Jonah was inside the fish's belly(Matt. 12:40). Anyone who is familiar with that account knows Jonah was inside the fish for a full 72 hr. period and not a second less. Therefore, it's simple to deduce that nobody can honestly or logically fit 72 hrs fit between a Thursday or Friday afternoon crucifixion and a Sunday morning resurrection.

What the Bible actually teaches is that Christ died Wednesday afternoon(Dan. 9:27) and was resurrected at the same exact time on Saturday. The Bible says that while the women went to His tomb Sunday morning, He was already gone. The women couldn't have known He was resurrected on Saturday because they kept the Sabbath like they were supposed to(Luk. 23:56). The NT only mentions Sunday about 8 times, and in none of those times does it ever indicate that it's holy. The writers all continue to refer to it simply as the first day of the week like the OT does. From Genesis to Revelation, the Sabbath is the only day of the week God ever gave a name to or held in high esteem as being sacred.
