I'm not sure what version you are using, but there is some ambiguity in whatever translation it is. The English Standard Version and New American Standard Bible (NASB) both use "chosen" there, and they snuff out any ambiguity in relation to the Hebrew used in Isaiah 42 (and in other places in the Old Testament, and in the Greek in the New Testament also). We should see "chosen" instead of "elect" in Isaiah 42:1. God the Father did not choose Jesus, per se, but rather chose to accomplish His salvation and issue His judgment through Jesus and His work on the cross.
