I was just talking to a friend about a similar subject. He said he grew up without a television in the house until he was 13. It benefited him greatly because he read tons of books. I told him that I can remember as a child sitting down with encyclopedias and dictionaries and just reading. I wasn't much on fiction. Lol

I remember in the 1990's, my husband and I had pagers where you could send very short texts. When he was at work, he'd have me give him the scores on his favorite teams via a text. We had to be very strategic. lol
When I was 11, paging mom was "only for emergencies." One day I came home from school screaming and paging her.

She drove a half hour for this "emergency". My dog got ahold of a mouse.

Got in trouble for that one.

I often wish for the days of no internet...or at least back to flip phone days. Idk ...internet has its benefits, but also, with more technology comes less and less privacy.

Maybe we'll experience that before long anyways. It would be beneficial to learn alternative ways to do things like staying warm and cooking. I watched a YT video the other day (on the internet, lol) of a homestead channel. They were demonstrating how to cook with a sun oven. With that, you can cook with just the sun, even in winter...no need for wood or gas.

Build your home library.... encyclopedias, how-to books, gardening, animal husbandry, survival skills, foraging, herbs, soap making, etc.

Then I would suggest getting involved in a church with human contact and making friends.
I strongly agree. Though it’s harder to put real people on “ignore”. And real people put demands on your time. And I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Oh, and I met the lovely lady who became my wife at church. There’s that.

I met my last wife at church, and we had 8 wonderful years together. My health got in the way of our marriage though. Internet can be good but does not replace the real thing. I watch online Mass often, but it doesn't compare to going to church and attending service there.

I learn a lot of that from the Civil War period and victorians, even though their hats and their paint kept killing them. They always just kept dying for stupid reasons, but a lot of it is interesting.

It was common to sleep in the kitchen because the cooking fire was there.

Today, IMO, nobody is more resourceful than the homemaking women in India. I probably learned most from them.

Plus, at face-to-face church you get a family. Sisters and brothers and grandmothers and kids and even the occasional crazy uncle. You’ll get sisters who’ll bring you food when you come home from the hospital and brothers who’ll mow your lawn when you’re too sick to do it yourself, and aunts who’ll sit with your elderly mom while you run errands that have to be done, and folks who’ll pray for you when you really need it…. You can’t get that on the internet.

Yes and we are instructed to pay a tithe, 10% to church. And that goes to feed the hungry. Things like that make us selfless.

I struggle a lot with going to church. Last time I went, I broke down in tears because I was having such a hard time, and then the pastor stopped the worship team to pray about depression.

Every time I went there was always a false prophecy of the week.

I don't know if I'm actually ready to find a new one. Wherever I go, I'd be going alone with my oldest and I don't know if I'm ready to try again.

Sadly not everyone’s experience of church life is like that, yes all above is true of some members but not all.
We wound and neglect many of our own xxx

Sigh. You’re right, of course. And so we build walls so we don’t get hurt, and our only connection with others is through the internet personae we create. “I touch no one, and no one touches me”.

I think it damages trust, it did with me. However I was too reliant on people and not reliant on the Lord… so I needed to heal and learn. I would be open to go back to a church family , but with a different expectation and attitude. However it’s not the right time for me at the moment.

When you do try again, try to find a church where they take seriously Jesus’s command to love one another.

Fluffyyellow duck,
There is a saying ‘ don’t throw the baby out with the bath water ‘
There is good and bad in all things, first examine why you would want to leave the internet out of your life to determine whether it is all of it, or just certain things you need to cut out. I think there is a danger of certain things impacting and distracting, while others things are good gifts that are part of the provision. However the Lord does call people into the wilderness at times………..

I have a hard time enjoying church because of medical problems I have. I do go every so often, but mostly do online Mass because of that. But I find that online Mass can't replace the in person experience. The Holy Spirit can be strong when it's in person.

Matthew 18:20
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

Before I take a break from the internet, I wanted to do this post.

If you had to quit the internet for life, how would you do it? We rely so much on the internet.

Even when I mostly quit for a year, I still had a Kindle. This time I don't, which means I would rely on things I didn't have to before...

Cookbooks, crochet and knitting books, tailoring, I'd have to go back to the store to buy information and use a handheld calculator - just like the pilgrims did.

We would have to use Lisa Frank stationary to communicate.
The internet is like the the sun, which has many benefits to offer, but can also be harmful if exposed to unwisely.

God wants us to use our gifts and skills for His glory, which motivates me to volunteer my responses on forums.

The thought does occur to me that if I lose the plot when I'm old and infirm I may well need to quit posting, but God willing that day will not come until I stop breathing or my heart gives out.
