Under Salazars dictatorship the people had nothing and couldn't even speak in fear of being persecuted...
Education was poor and health was poor unless you worked for the state...

Salazar did do a lot for Portugal as a nation but not for its people... There was never any freedom under him unless you agreed with him
Im not sure what you mean by a socialist country. The state already owned everything. Fascism is often referred to as national socialism so they are much the same. It became more capitalist after the revolution and open to other countries.
But the main change that everyone wanted to see was from a dictatorship to a democracy.

As for Portugals colonies... They were receiving international condemnation at the time, you realize... The colonial era had already ended... Portugal was the first and the last to have colonies in Africa...
Every other country had abolished slavery and returned their African colonies back; England, France, all of them... No one had colonies left in Africa except for Portugal. No one was still using African slavery except for Portugal... The pressure on them at the time was enormous from the world leaders.
Englands example stems from the age of exploration as they ended up with the most power, most land and biggest navy after Portugal and Spain were done. It had nothing to do with anything they did in the 20th century

One must remember that Portugal hasn't got 80 or 60 million people like the big European countries do... Its population is only 10 million now... The fact that they were so powerful in the day is a huge feat for a tiny nation. Im not sure such a small nation has ever had that much power

Yes he did do well to remain neutral in WW2. Azores is like the midway of the Atlantic and would of surely been contested by the Americans. Salazar had vowed to support Hitler but only in a few years he needed the time to arm up. When it started in 1939 Portugal was in no position to be engaging in war.
For a dictator i do see that he did a lot for his nation but was too totalitarian and the people suffered... I don't like the PIDE. I remember my parents naming them now after you reminded me. They were bad to not only my dad and other family but countless other Portuguese people. Keeping political prisoners just for having another opinion...

Only God has objective morality, every other form is just subjective and irrelevant... It was a huge pathway back to God for me, morality, the the atheists in that forum as well. It seemed like a simple topic on the surface, right and wrong, easy... I would listen to people talk and debate about it but i didn't understand what they were on about. It took more digging for me to understand morality as a concept and as Gods law and to understand its importance in society. I could go on but i'll stop talking about morality

No I am not Portuguese, I like world history and have read up on it years ago when I was reading about WWII and the Dictators back then, Salazar is still named and voted one of the favorite Portuguese people, by Portugal's people.
The difference between Fascism and Communism is that in Fascism you still get to keep your property, with Communism the state owns everything from your house to your land, Communism being the bigger evil of the two.
England didn't give up nothing, that's just a big deception, they just renamed their colonies as their Common Wealth's, Portugal discovered half if not more of the known world, they taught Columbus his navigational Skills, and most of the navigators and explorers were Portuguese, they just sailed under other countries flags because they got paid by that country to sail for them, they were masters of the sea.
Brazil who was a former Portuguese Colony still had slavery going on with the same segregation laws as the US, Blacks couldn't mix with the White and that went on way past the America's slavery period, so Portugal wasn't the only one who continued Slavery, after all those Portuguese colonies became independent, they couldn't support themselves, they sank into poverty as most of Africa did, you mentioned Apartheid, well during Apartheid South Africa was a productive nation after they ended Apartheid it sank into lawlessness and poverty, Nelson Mandela was a Communist, what good did he do after Apartheid ended?
Those African colonies after their independence sought help from their so called former Slave masters, which was a lie, nothing but propaganda, to defame the once brave and victorious Portuguese, the Africans themselves sold their own people into slavery, to this day they do it, no one likes to call it out because they say it's part of their culture, and then you'd be discriminating against the Africans.
East Timor when the Indonesia took over them decimated them to the point that they asked their former so called Slave Masters for help, that being Portugal, which I believe they did sent aid over there, I can't remember now, it's been awhile since I read about that.
Most of the former Portuguese colonies turned Communist and sank into poverty with their own government taking advantage of them, where they were in a better off state when they belonged to the Portuguese Empire, that's a fact.
Not to insult you Cristo Rei, but was your dad a socialist or communist sympathizer, just asking a question not accusing your dad, I was born and raised in the Ironbound section of Newark New Jersey, a big Portuguese community back in the day, and knew a few Portuguese guys and worked with a few of them all older men who fought in the Portuguese Wars in Africa, and when asked they all supported Salazar and loved him and called Mario Soares a communist who destroyed the country and sank them into deeper poverty to the point they became dependent on other European countries and the U.S. for aid afterwards, not saying now.
I do know that Portugal along with most of the Southern European countries that belong to the E.U. were always being bailed out by Germany and England, hence the Brexit and again the English were smart enough to keep their currency and not get mixed up in the Euro.
How could a country so small that had so much, their Empire was right next to the English Empire back in the day have lost it all? With all they discovered and owned they should be one of the richest nations in the world, instead they gave it all up, and became dependent on NATO and the E.U.

True... They sort of kept the riches from their colonies through the commonwealth. But in the 60s Portugal was the only ones fighting in Africa to keep their colonies and were under pressure from the rest of the world to stop it.
True... They are the greatest navigators from Europe. After they established their borders in the 14th century they had some time of peace and put a lot recourses into navigation and ship building while the rest of Europe was preoccupied with wars...
I believe Portugal knew America was their, north and south but kept it secret. They weren't looking to colonize to begin with, they were only interested in finding a way to Asia to trade directly with them. They would release maps with phantom lands on their to throw off the rest when they eventually entered the scene. Some say that Columbus was Portuguese but i don't think he was cos he was a terrible navigator... LoL. He had no idea where he was or where he was going or where he went... LoL

1579... Portugal, a tiny nation of only 1 million people, had all that. They were the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.
But it would all go in a blink of an eye.
In 1580 the king of Portugal died leaving no heir to the throne. The closest connection was through Spain. So Portugal got basically taken by Spain in what was known as the Iberian union from 1580 to 1640. Portugal was much richer than Spain and the Spanish plundered it...
After that Portugal was left in tatters and was only able to retain their sovereignty through a treaty with England, the oldest standing treaty to this day i believe.. Spain with a population of 9 million had amassed the biggest armada the world had ever seen and were conquering central and south America. The English joined the action and amassed an even bigger armada that defeated the Spanish. To become the top dog
With only 1 million people, the recourses needed to hold all those colonies became overwhelming for Portugal, it became too much of a burden on them. Always fighting off the Spanish neighbours as well as fighting off natives all around the world and the Arabic fleets who did control the trade in the Indian ocean... And then came the Dutch east India company as well... It was just not possible. They had bitten off more than they could chew... To much land, to few men
But colonization was never Portugals goal to begin with... Their goals were
- To find a sea route to Asia
- To spread the gospel across the globe

The original charts were probably designed by Cristovao de Mendonca who set sail from the Portuguese base at Malaaca in Malaysia with four ships on a secret mission to discover Marco Polo's Island of Gold south of Java, Portuguese artifacts have been found on the Australian and New Zealand coasts.

I said that they spent time and recourses fending off Spain but i never said they occupied Portugal
I said they lost their wealth, secrets of navigation and ship design to Spain under the Iberian Union 1580-1640. Read about it
And you even said it yourself. Portugal couldn't have held off Spain alone, cos as i said, they were severely outnumbered 9 to 1 and lacked rescources from being plundered under the Iberian Union

Mario Soares was a known Socialist, Portugal has been a Socialist country more than it has been a Democracy, depending what Government got elected. You are being misled I've studied world history and have spoken with former Portuguese Soldiers I worked with, one was a General during those wars, and they all hate Mario Soares, I was learned firsthand from the very people that fought in those wars, not history that was written by someone who wasn't there, just like they did here in America and write lies and teach lies.
I'm not going to argue my friend as it's your Ancestral home, so you would know better, England is a tiny nation and they continue their dominance to this day and are wealthy as well.
I believe I read somewhere a long time ago Spain took over Portugal twice and twice Portugal had to fight them off, Portugal was also the first to sweep out the Muslims hoards that had been in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula for over 500 years by the first King of Portugal Afonso Henriques I, Afonso the Conqueror.
Also England helped out Portugal during the Napoleonic Wars that swept Europe, not the during the multiple attempts of the Spaniards try to take control of Portugal, the Portuguese were warriors, a people to be feared by their enemies, then all of a sudden that changed.
If Portugal had followed their ally's example and kept their colonies and just renamed them commonwealths, they'd have more than they do now.
But then again the things I'm saying are unChristian, like conquering and warfare, so forgive me, as I was just trying to go over the tiny nation as you put it, their once dominance on the map, is all.

As to Nations, take the UK for example, what did it want and why one may ask yourself.

Reggie, I agree with you, sometimes I let things be as not to argue.
The left doesn't stop the hype of getting vaccinated, just yesterday I saw on TV that South Africa has a new strain of Covid one more deadlier and that the vaccines they have now will not do anything most likely, so they'll have to work on another vaccine, which Pfizer is already doing.
We have restricted all flights coming from South Africa and certain surrounding countries, except for U.S. Citizens who will have to be quarantined.
Do the sheeple not see, that they will keep on coming up with new variants of the virus as scare tactics just to keep people flocking to get their jab, these people will get a thousand jabs one on top of the other as long as their government keeps up the scare tactics.

Yes that was last year I took that picture, that's a light snowfall compared to what we usually get when we get a real snowfall, foot upon foot of snow, and forget about it when it's a Blizzard, sometimes you won't be able to see your car, it'll be buried in snow.

You grab a shovel which I have in back of my car and shovel my car out, if it gets so bad where the State declares a State of Emergency, you might get a call from your company to stay home, depending on how bad the roads get and if they plowed them.
99% of the time I make it to work, unless my boss calls me and tells me the company is closed because of inclement weather conditions and the State of emergency declared by the Governor.
