“Jesus told this story to his disciples: “There was a certain rich man who had a manager handling his affairs.

One day a report came that the manager was wasting his employer’s money. So the employer called him in and said, ‘What’s this I hear about you?

Get your report in order, because you are going to be fired.’ “The manager thought to himself, ‘Now what? My boss has fired me. I don’t have the strength to dig ditches, and I’m too proud to beg.

Ah, I know how to ensure that I’ll have plenty of friends who will give me a home when I am fired.’ “So he invited each person who owed money to his employer to come and discuss the situation.

He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe him?’ The man replied, ‘I owe him 800 gallons of olive oil.’

So the manager told him, ‘Take the bill and quickly change it to 400 gallons.’ “‘And how much do you owe my employer?’ he asked the next man.

‘I owe him 1,000 bushels of wheat,’ was the reply. ‘Here,’ the manager said, ‘take the bill and change it to 800 bushels. ’

“The rich man had to admire the dishonest rascal for being so shrewd. And it is true that the children of this world are more shrewd in dealing with the world around them than are the children of the light.

Here’s the lesson: Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home. “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.

But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?

And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other.

You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money, heard all this and scoffed at him.

Then he said to them, “You like to appear righteous in public, but God knows your hearts. What this world honors is detestable in the sight of God. “Until John the Baptist, the law of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides.

But now the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is eager to get in. But that doesn’t mean that the law has lost its force. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest point of God’s law to be overturned.

“For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.””

I have always found that a strange account Matt, like you said Jesus gave it, and it is not literal, but clearly the "manager" was basically a thief, although he took no money, he expected to make friends at the expense of the employer. Why would Jesus promote something like this in a positive light?

I did something similar in my early career, I worked for a housing firm, if the residents didn't mow their yards they would be charged a rather high sum, so I would knock on their door, and tell them I was ordered to mow their lawn, but if they gave me half, I would not turn it in for them to have to pay, seemed like a great deal for both of us, but my boss wasn't as forgiving as Jesus was, and I didn't receive the commendation that the manager got, but I learned a valuable lesson because of it.

that has always concerned me. Because if we are being honest and not boasting in the flesh..many might say (admit)they have not been very faithful in the least. Like in business going bankrupt and on the verge of suicide because of humiliation…then a follower of Christ appears speaking of God’s love where the man that has been humiliated in business affairs asks “why would God call such a failure?” The follower might mention the harlots and despised (not admired of men), the base things like the man who had many demons hiding in the caves cutting himself …telling the man ready to end his life for the humiliation, telling him God doesn’t put His Faith in men (which is weak) but in His Spirit (which is willing). So the man asked again, not shrewd in business affairs but having made a mess of it all …why would God give true riches to one who has failed in business? What would any tell the man bankrupt and humiliated in front of his family and peers? Why would God give a failure true riches?

The lesson is...if you can't walk among the holy then make friends among the righteous.

And your version is downplaying the lord's commendation of the unjust steward. He calls him wise.

But most believers are not so wise. Most are taught that they will inherit glory and as such do not make friends among the righteous...instead taking a "superior" position in condemning the righteous as those whose works are as "filthy rags."

But God's judgments are not for us to use against others. As we judge so we will also be judged.

Here is all of it; in the Youngs format.

Luke 16
Young's Literal Translation

16 And he said also unto his disciples, `A certain man was rich, who had a steward, and he was accused to him as scattering his goods;

2 and having called him, he said to him, What [is] this I hear about thee? render the account of thy stewardship, for thou mayest not any longer be steward.

3 `And the steward said in himself, What shall I do, because my lord doth take away the stewardship from me? to dig I am not able, to beg I am ashamed: --

4 I have known what I shall do, that, when I may be removed from the stewardship, they may receive me to their houses.

5 `And having called near each one of his lord's debtors, he said to the first, How much dost thou owe to my lord?

6 and he said, A hundred baths of oil; and he said to him, Take thy bill, and having sat down write fifty.

7 `Afterward to another he said, And thou, how much dost thou owe? and he said, A hundred cors of wheat; and he saith to him, Take thy bill, and write eighty.

8 `And the lord commended the unrighteous steward that he did prudently, because the sons of this age are more prudent than the sons of the light, in respect to their generation.

9 and I say to you, Make to yourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye may fail, they may receive you to the age-during tabernacles.

10 `He who is faithful in the least, [is] also faithful in much; and he who in the least [is] unrighteous, is also unrighteous in much;

11 if, then, in the unrighteous mammon ye became not faithful -- the true who will entrust to you?

12 and if in the other's ye became not faithful -- your own, who shall give to you?

13 `No domestic is able to serve two lords, for either the one he will hate, and the other he will love; or one he will hold to, and of the other he will be heedless; ye are not able to serve God and mammon.'

14 And also the Pharisees, being lovers of money, were hearing all these things, and were deriding him,

15 and he said to them, `Ye are those declaring yourselves righteous before men, but God doth know your hearts; because that which among men is high, [is] abomination before God;

16 the law and the prophets [are] till John; since then the reign of God is proclaimed good news, and every one doth press into it;

17 and it is easier to the heaven and the earth to pass away, than of the law one tittle to fall.

18 `Every one who is sending away his wife, and marrying another, doth commit adultery; and every one who is marrying her sent away from a husband doth commit adultery.

19 `And -- a certain man was rich, and was clothed in purple and fine linen, making merry sumptuously every day,

20 and there was a certain poor man, by name Lazarus, who was laid at his porch, full of sores,

21 and desiring to be filled from the crumbs that are falling from the table of the rich man; yea, also the dogs, coming, were licking his sores.

22 `And it came to pass, that the poor man died, and that he was carried away by the messengers to the bosom of Abraham -- and the rich man also died, and was buried;

23 and in the hades having lifted up his eyes, being in torments, he doth see Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom,

24 and having cried, he said, Father Abraham, deal kindly with me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and may cool my tongue, because I am distressed in this flame.

25 `And Abraham said, Child, remember that thou did receive -- thou -- thy good things in thy life, and Lazarus in like manner the evil things, and now he is comforted, and thou art distressed;

26 and besides all these things, between us and you a great chasm is fixed, so that they who are willing to go over from hence unto you are not able, nor do they from thence to us pass through.

27 `And he said, I pray thee, then, father, that thou mayest send him to the house of my father,

28 for I have five brothers, so that he may thoroughly testify to them, that they also may not come to this place of torment.

29 `Abraham saith to him, They have Moses and the prophets, let them hear them;

30 and he said, No, father Abraham, but if any one from the dead may go unto them, they will reform.

31 And he said to him, If Moses and the prophets they do not hear, neither if one may rise out of the dead will they be persuaded.'

.if you can't walk among the holy then make friends among the righteous.

“then make friends among the righteous”
Is that what is said or instead
Luke 16:9 And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

and I say to you, Make to yourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness, that when ye may fail, they may receive you to the age-during tabernacles.

Most are taught that they will inherit glory and as such do not make friends among the righteous

How does “make friends with the mammon of unrighteousness” become “make friends among the righteous” or most “can't walk among the holy” needing then to “make friends among the righteous.” When the making friends pertains to “unrighteousness of mammon”, so that when you fail
If it is referring to making friends among the righteous, if you can’t walk with the holy…why then is the point made “when you fail”?

This is an interesting take as the parable itself, I do not understand personally as some other parables Jesus may speak about, even reading this is kind of hard to understand a little bit even reading out loud to myself.

Would like to thank you for taking time to present and interesting case here.

Most of us will fail the grace of God. (I know that so many have been taught that grace is the same as mercy...but I'm speaking of the NT grace...the grace of Jesus Christ) To whom much is given more is required. So then Jesus is helping the majority of us..."when we fail" the standard of the high calling that is according to holiness, we have something to fall back upon. If we behave righteously...then we have a place among the righteous...and room will be made for us in their eternal habitations (the nations of they who are saved).

Don't we fail, doing the will of God from time to time, @Episkopos (Flesh vs spirit?)?

How can a person fail the grace of God? Grace is given, as an unmerited favor.

You're speaking of Old Testament grace. As in..."if I have found favour in Your sight" based on human righteousness and the free mercy of God.

But NT grace is the power of God to fulfill the "letter of the law" at the highest level according to God's holiness.

We fail the grace of God by lacking the faith and determination to get the full measure of grace. Instead we "bury the talent" of what we have received. We receive the initial grace (at regeneration) as a sample...or a down payment (aravon)...or what is called the "earnest" of the Spirit. Once the conditions are met (full surrender) we receive the full portion of God's allotment of grace (full measure) so that we can bear a holy and eternal fruit. Short of that kind of faithfulness we fail God's grace.

"These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful." Rev. 17:14

@Episkopos I do not understand where you are coming from.

I was actually talking about Ephesians 2:8-9.

Those who come to Christ, being it grace being saved through faith. How can one fail grace? Doesn't one actually fail in doing the will of God from time to time?

Do you remember what Jesus had said? Mark 3:35? (1 John 3:23)

I believe sometimes we fail in that aspect, doing the will of God but it something we strive to do inwardly by our heart setting our mind on the things of above, and allowing God to work in and through us in this life, remaining faithful in him.

I personally believe that from what Jesus says, I am an unworthy servant just doing my duty when it comes to matters when it is for me to abide in christ, and share with people when lead by the Holy Spirit. (Luke 17:7-10).

Thank God for Gods grace.

Luke 16:8-9 And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. [9] And I say unto you, Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations.

Make friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when you fail …to me sounds like allowing one freewill to go after what they are fully persuaded and hard to convince otherwise will satisfy them, until they fail. Several passages (Imo) touch on this for example when God turns them over to a reprobate mind, giving them over to their own lust…or so that they will learn not to blasphemy the Spirit, turn them over to Satan.

what is to “go you” and see; make you friends with the mammon of unrighteousness, (for this cause), that, when you fail. If it is not the same as to go after satan and the way that comes to nothing? Consider the son who wasted all his goods, but returned.

References to learning or being taught of God that you ought to Love one another: Romans 6:20-21 For when you were the servants of sin, you were free from righteousness. [21] What fruit had you then in those things whereof you are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.

Philemon 1:15-16 For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that you should receive him for ever—everlasting— (so that when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations).; [16] Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

1 Peter 1:6-7 Wherein you greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold temptations: [7] That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

2 Corinthians 2:6-10 Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. [7] So that contrariwise you ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. [8] Wherefore I beseech you that you would confirm your love toward him. [9] For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether you be obedient in all things. [10] To whom you forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;

I did something similar in my early career, I worked for a housing firm, if the residents didn't mow their yards they would be charged a rather high sum, so I would knock on their door, and tell them I was ordered to mow their lawn, but if they gave me half, I would not turn it in for them to have to pay, seemed like a great deal for both of us, but my boss wasn't as forgiving as Jesus was, and I didn't receive the commendation that the manager got
It's because you didn't do it on behalf of the company. If the homeowner had perceived that it was the company giving them the discount your boss would have gained favor with them. The parable was given so we Christians in God's service would be shrewd by using God's possessions we have been given charge over to gain friends and influence people for our boss, God. The world knows how to do that, but the people of the light do not. The people of the light are not very shrewd.

This is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. It's really about forgiveness, but applies to other things God has entrusted us with. We gain friends and influence people when we give away God's forgiveness that we have been given charge over to others who are indebted to God. It makes God look really, really good. In fact, God wishes we'd be as shrewd with the forgiveness we have received that the world is with the things they have charge over so it would reflect good on Him and win people to him.

It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest point of God’s law to be overturned.

The born again are "not under the Law".... but..>"under Grace".

"the LAW..... is the power of SIN"...

The Law is not made for the Righteous, its made for the unrighteous...

"Christ is the END OF THE LAW....for Righteousness"..."for everyone who believes". = All the Born again.

So, if you are not born again, then worrying about the Law would be exactly what you should be doing, as you are "under it".

If you are born again, then you are delivered from the "Curse of the Law"... and are not under the law, but "under Grace".

but the Pharisees knew how to be shrewd managers as in Mark 7:11 but you say, “If a man says to [his ] father or [his] mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (an offering) that is to say, given to God. You no longer permit him to do anything for [his]father or [his] mother, this invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down, and do many things such as that.

what I get from that is the Pharisees were full-of-it and it wasn’t an offering given to God but their saving-face to appear righteous before men and to gain mens favor. Those who loved the praise of men Romans 2:29. Big question: had the Pharisees made friends with the mammon of unrighteousness??

The whole parable of the shrewd manager…it could be likely the Pharisees standing by over heard the parable…because why else give a parable when he explained —‘Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [14] And in them (parables) is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive: [15] For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.’—it is likely the Pharisees and leaders would have looked around bewildered saying “is He talking about us again?” what does he mean “I say unto you go make friends with the mammon of unrighteousness, so that, when you fail”? “Is that against us again”? “What is this He teaches? Where does this teaching of His come from?” From men? Or from God? “We think He has a devil.”
