Salvation is impossible apart from obedience. This is true. Which is probably why Jesus told us that when, for example, we give to the poor, we should do so quietly. (Matthew 6:1-4) I suppose we should likewise be quiet about our not murdering, not stealing, not craving material things, not fooling around with that girl at work, ...
But then there's the little matter of what goes on inside our hearts.
I see this same argument over and over.
In my better moments, I see glimpses of the reality that God really does love me, and I know that He doesn't want me to do the Thou-Shalt-Nots, and I know that it pleases the One who loved me and died for me (Galatians 2:20) when I, for example, show compassion to lost and hurting people. Would to God that these moments were not so few and far between!
(And in writing that, I realized something else...)
Per Matt 6, there is nothing wrong with giving alms openly or praying openly for Jesus said to 'let your light so shine before men' hence Jesus was not requiring absolute secrecy. What Jesus was condemning was the false motives in doing these things openly simply to be seen by men.
