The law is to convince him of sin.
Absolutley. It also points to perfection. Jesus kept the Law and so we are expected to be light, Christlike. What does that mean to you? For one, don't sin.
The law knows nothing of grace, and it ought to know nothing of it.
I have often thought that if you kept the law _ for a time _ you wouldn't have to be forgiving, merciful or loving towards your neighbor ... so basically it is telling you what not to do.
Faith in God alone maintains the authority of the law (keeps it nullified for believers in Christ—NC
I wouldn't go that far. We can't be saved by the law, because we can't keep it fully; but doesn't God expect us to be obedient to it? That is an expected life standard. Besides, didn't Jesus give us two commandments that ALL the Law falls under? It is the Law of Love. We can't keep it perfectly, we can't be saved by it, but we don't discard it.
If I am wrong, what then are we to be obedient to?
it is the law of liberty (God’s Word, esp. the Gospel of Christ—NC), because I possess already the life. “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death”
I call it the Law of Love.
We are free from the judgment of sin, it's bondage and death ... but not free to do whatever you want. The Ten Commandments are in the back of our minds to obey, again not to be saved but to be obedient.
Have you discarded them and liberally covet or steal or murder because you are now free from the Law? NO.

That is NOT answering my question @marks...are we lawless?
What about the over 1,000 Imperatives?
No longer to be obeyed?
Or is the obeying part considered to be works?
But it does answer your question. No, we are not lawless, we are under the Law of Christ. No law governs me, Jesus Christ Himself governs me.

I'm not trying to obey lists of rules, I'm trying to allow the fruit of the Holy Spirit, I'm trying to walk in the works pre-ordained.

Commandments in Old Covenant were given to Israel, and naturally, some, Love God, Don't Steal, these are things everyone should/shouldn't do. Lists given in Paul's letters tell us what it does and doesn't look like to be under the Law of Christ. He tells us much to keep us from error, and give us direction, but the mature Christian is led by the Holy Spirit, not by lists of Laws.

And instead of keeping lists of Laws, we keep the Law of Love, which is a much more demanding, more encompassing Law. Except it's not really, it's what we do because we love. As Christ is formed within us, we learn more to love, and as we love, Jesus directs us in sharing that love with others.

Much love!

The Imperatives, all rooted in the commandments, and to be obeyed, which most here consider as "works"

That's what I see @marks
These are all good verses, and we should be reading these chapters routinely - IMO - meditating on them.

I think of the Bible as our "new DNA", and these imperatives, and much more than just this list, as we get it into our brains, this helps in the renewing of our minds. So as we go about to live in love for others, we know exactly what that does and doesn't look like.

If you are not likeminded and of one accord - or working peaceably to become so - that's not love. So then the answer Isn't to figure out the steps to becoming likeminded, and then do that. The answer is to grow in love.

Much love!

I see these.........

Eph_4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
===================================================
In love - in contrast to "in craftiness;" spurious professions of love by crafty teachers of error. "Truth" is never to be sacrificed to so-called 'charity;' yet is to be maintained in charity. Truth in word and act, love in manner and spirit (cf. Eph_4:21; Eph_4:24).
Grow up - from the state of "children" to be 'full-grown men.' There is growth only in the spiritually alive, not in the dead.
===================================================
1Pe_2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

2Pe_3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.

..........not, grow in love brother.

Ok, I can go with that . . . so I would say, become loving.

These two commandments - love others, trust Jesus - do these, all will be done.

Much love!

The Imperatives, all rooted in the commandments, and to be obeyed, which most here consider as "works"

That's what I see @marks
I don't see those above as commands as such, nor do I see the 'ten commandments' of Exodus 20 as commands in the normally accepted manner. That expression, "be" etc etc, I view as promises, much the same as "thou shalt". It is a command, sure, but not that one must strive to obey, but rather that one surrenders to in faith. It's like a command of God toward nature as in creation.
KJV Psalms 33:1-9
1 Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.
2 Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings.
3 Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.
4 For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.
5 He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
7 He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.
8 Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
9 For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.

KJV Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14-15
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
Etc etc....

"Thou shalt", not to be obeyed as such, but to be allowed. Righteousness by faith.

KJV Romans 5:17-18
17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
In the above sense, I believe is the only way to reconcile Paul with James, wherein Paul says by our works no man is justified, but James says we are not justified by faith only, but also by our works.

In the above sense, I believe is the only way to reconcile Paul with James, wherein Paul says by our works no man is justified, but James says we are not justified by faith only, but also by our works.
First Commandment. before me. In His presence, for He sees all things. There is only one God; all
else was created by Him (Gen. 1:1). He proved His supremacy by judging Pharaoh and the gods of
Egypt (9:14; 12:12; 15:11). Therefore, our first obligation is to give our worship, absolute obedience,
and supreme love to Him alone (Deut. 6:4–5; 10:12—11:1).

20:4–6 Second Commandment. graven image. Idol; visible representation of a divine being. God is the
Creator of heaven, earth, and the water, and must not be confused with His creations (Rom. 1:19–23).
In the plagues, He demonstrated His mastery over the created world and humiliated the idols of Egypt.
Therefore, though God blesses some visual arts (31:1–11), we must never make an image of God
(including any person of the Trinity) or worship with a man-made image of anything before us. For He
is a jealous God, not in a petty or unjust sense, but with a holy zeal for His glory (34:14). upon the
children. Insofar as they also hate God (34:7).

20:7 Third Commandment. name. How He makes His glory known and feared (Deut. 28:58). The
revelation of God’s name is central to the book of Exodus (3:13–15). in vain. For nothing. not hold him
guiltless. Will punish him. We must never speak of God without reverence (Lev. 24:16), especially in
prayer, worship, or a vow. Pharaoh despised God’s name with defiance (5:2) and hypocritical
confessions (9:27,30), but God teaches men to fear Him, for “I am the LORD” (20:2).
20:8–11 Fourth Commandment. Remember. Plan and do. sabbath day. Day to stop and rest. manservant
. . . maidservant. Male and female servants. stranger that is within thy gates. Foreigner living with the
Israelites. wherefore. Therefore. hallowed. Set apart the entire day as holy. By His own example in the
creation week, God instituted a pattern of six days of work and the seventh day for rest from ordinary
labor and for holy assembly for worship (Gen. 2:1–3; Lev. 23:3). Christ affirmed this law by declaring
Himself Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27), which is now called the Lord’s Day (Rev. 1:10), the first day
of the week when Christ rose (Matt. 28:1).

20:12 Fifth Commandment. God created the family (Gen. 1:27–28). He is the Father of His people, and
they must serve Him like a son (4:22–23). Therefore, glorifying God requires honoring thy father and
thy mother, including other authorities that are like fathers (2 Kings 5:13; 1 Thess. 5:12–13).

20:13 Sixth Commandment. Human life is sacred above all animals, for God created us in the image of
God (Gen. 1:26; 9:6). Therefore we should not desire harm or speak evil against another person (Matt.
5:21–22). This verb kill is used of murder and manslaughter, but never of war; God gave government
the authority to use deadly force (Rom. 13:4).

20:14 Seventh Commandment. God is the author of marriage between one man and one woman (Gen.
2:18–25), and demands that we honor its commitments (Heb. 13:4). Christ explained that intentional
sexual lust is adultery in the heart, a sin worthy of the fire of hell (Matt. 5:27–30).

20:15 Eighth Commandment. God gave man dominion of the earth (Gen. 1:26), and thus the right to
personal property. We must respect and protect each other’s property. We should not only cease stealing,
but also work hard to give to those in need (Eph. 4:28).

20:16 Ninth Commandment. witness. Testimony with respect to law or covenant (23:1; Gen. 31:44;
Deut. 19:15–20; 31:26). God speaks, and His words define reality and deserve trust (Gen. 1:3; 2:16–17;
3:1–5). We, created in His image, must speak only the truth (Lev. 19:11).
20:17

Tenth Commandment. covet. Desire. God’s law regulates even the longing and contentment of the
heart. He provides for His people, both in the garden (Gen. 2:8–15) and in the wilderness (15:23
—17:7). Therefore we must be thankful, not covetous (Eph. 5:3–5).

Amen, that the power of God's word... It is His creative medium. And it is by beholding we are changed... Recreated in His image. An image that walks as He walked..."I have kept My Father's Commandments".
.
Amen!

I heard Randy Skeete say this morning that God's law comes from His heart, so when He says "If you love Me, keep My commandments," He's also saying "If you love Me, please don't break My heart." :sob:

But it does mean that we can, of our own volition, choose to cooperate with Christ and participate in his righteousness. Just my two cents worth...

The only way we could participate in the Righteousness of Christ is to be able to achieve it for ourselves.
This would be the person to whom Jesus says.."apart from ME you can do NOTHING".

So, we don't participate with it, we are become it...we are "made righteous" if born again and not just water baptized and religious.
A born again Christian, the instant they are born again, have BECOME as righteous as they can ever become, as God didn't give to the born again, a partial righteousness as "the GIFT of Rightouesness"....., but rather Father God has imputed them as becoming, "the righteousness of God, in Christ".

When a believer understands this Grace of God correctly, they will no longer have any pretense about ..."I am righteous if i try to perform it", and instead they will understand, = """i have been made righteous and now i exist there as a SON/Daughter of God.""""

= BORN AGAIN.

To understand this, is to come to the revelation, regarding the difference between Salvation, and Discipleship.

Yup, spot on, as usual.

Rom 8:2 mentions a "law". Maybe you can you tell us something about
that; especially how it's different from Moses' law.
_
law of the Spirit of life. The justified sinner has the Holy Spirit within him (v. 9), bringing a new
principle of spiritual vitality toward God that delivers him from the principle of sin (7:23).

8:3–4 law could not do. The law can show us our sin (3:20; 7:7) but can neither enable us to stop
committing those sins nor atone for sin because in spite of all attempts to keep the law we are fallen and
sinful men (flesh). likeness of sinful flesh. Without ceasing to be God, Christ became like us in all areas
except for our sin (Heb. 4:15; 7:26). for sin. To bear its guilt as a sacrifice to God (3:24–25). condemned
sin in the flesh.

Christ destroyed the power of sin by bearing its guilt. The result of His atoning work is a
people who, under the direction and quickening of the Holy Spirit, begin to keep the law of God from
the heart, since that law is still the divine definition of holiness.

8:5–6 There are only two categories: those who live according to man’s fallen nature and those who are
indwelt by the Spirit. carnally. In a fleshly manner. death . . . life and peace. Death and life are not only
the future destinies of men but their present spiritual conditions (Eph. 2:1,5).

8:7 carnal mind is enmity against God. The mindset of fallen man is hatred of God (John 3:19–20;
15:18,23), a futile war indeed (Ps. 2). neither . . . can be. It is impossible for those without the Spirit to
obey God’s commandments from the heart, for even when outwardly obedient they remain enemies of

God (Rom. 5:10; Col. 1:21).
8:9 But ye. In stark contrast to the wicked (vv. 7–8). not in the flesh. Not in the same kingdom as the
wicked, and thus not ruled by sin. but in the Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives them the freedom and power
to submit with delight to God’s law (7:22,25) and thus to please God as obedient sons (v. 14). Everyone
who belongs to Christ has this Spirit. Spirit of God . . . Spirit of Christ. The Holy Spirit proceeds from
both the Father and the Son in the Trinity, coming from the Father through the mediation of Christ (John
14:26; 16:7; Titus 3:5–6).

8:10–11 Though sin has brought death to their bodies (mortal ), the Holy Spirit will bring life, applying
the power of Christ’s resurrection (1:4; 1 Cor. 15:22,44–45)

.
NOTE ON 8:2 The evidence that believers are in Christ is that the
power of sin has been broken in their lives by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Law in both instances means principle.

ROMANS—NOTE ON 8:3 The law (in this instance, the Mosaic law) could not
solve humanity’s problem because sin employs the law for its own

purposes, as ch. 7 explained.

God sent his Son as a sacrifice for sin (an
idiomatic phrase designating a sin offering) and paid the full penalty for sin
in his sacrifice (condemned sin). In the flesh refers to Christ’s body, and in
the likeness of sinful flesh means that Jesus became fully human, even
though he was sinless.

ROMANS—NOTE ON 8:4 righteous requirement of the law … fulfilled. This
could mean the requirement is fulfilled in the new life that Christians live
on the basis of Christ’s work, or it may refer to the full penalty of the law
being met at the cross.

We died to the law of Moses. Because the promise was made to Abraham 430 before the law of Moses.

Galatians 3:8,17-19 KJV
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. [17] And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. [18] For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. [19] Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator.

That’s why Abraham is the father of faith and we are the children of Abraham
Galatians 3:29 KJV
And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Galatians 3:7 KJV
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.

The law is good…

Galatians 3:21-22 KJV
Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

but the flesh is weak, that’s why we cannot obey the law.
[22] But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

It’s important to note that we are in the flesh that’s why we are cursed because the flesh cannot obey because it was weak and the law of God is holy and just.
In Romans 7, the man wants to obey God but the problem is he can’t help but do what he doesn’t like. In short, he’s a servant and in bondage with sin.

Romans 7:14,18 KJV
For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.

[18]For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

That’s why he cries, Romans 7:24 KJV
O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? (helpless state)

That’s where the solution comes:
Romans 7:25 KJV
I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Jesus was sent by God in the likeness of sinful flesh, who is filled with the Holy Spirit, and obeyed all the law of Moses.

Matthew 3:15 KJV
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

Matthew 5:17 KJV
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Romans 8:3 KJV
For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:

Now the gospel of Jesus is about him dying in our place (because we were cursed and appointed to die) The wrath that should be poured on us was poured on him. He died on our behalf so that we can live righteously by his life.

Galatians 2:19 KJV
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.

Now Jesus, the mediator of the new covenant, has a new law called the law of liberty. (setting us free from the bondage of sin)

James 1:25 KJV
But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

His two commandments (Love God and love your neighbor as yourself) are a summary of the 10 commandments. (The law of Christ/The law of Spirit)

Matthew 22:37-40 KJV
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus said, “Keep my commandments.” Now how can we who are in the flesh obey the law of liberty? It is by dying.

Galatians 2:20 KJV
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Galatians 5:24 KJV
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

We can only obey God’s new commandments by crucifying the flesh with the affections and lusts. How?

By his Spirit, which is also his Word.

Ephesians 6:17 KJV
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

If we truly believe Jesus, we will obey what he says. Like the centurion said:

Matthew 8:8-9 KJV
The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.
[9] For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

Likewise, God created everything in this world by his word. Jesus is the Word, the Word became flesh.

If we truly believe Jesus, we will obey his Word, and we become a new creature, just as God created everything by his word and it was so.
How do you know that you have obeyed his word? You do not cause anyone to stumble and you cannot sin.

1 Corinthians 8:9 KJV
But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

1 John 2:10-11 KJV
He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. [11] But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

Only by loving God and loving our neighbors (fulfilling the law) can we be not under the law.

James 2:8-13 KJV
If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
[9] But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
[10] For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
[11] For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
[12] So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.
[13] For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.
Well said.
God bless
J.
