Is it ok for a man to pray while wearing a head covering? Paul told the Corinthians it was NOT ok.

1 Corinthians 11:4
English Standard Version
4 Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head,
Take off your hat, it is and has always been an act of humility and respect. Men took it off when they greeted a Lady or entered any building, restaurant, etc. A hat says you are concealing something.
Women are to conceal their beauty, adornment ( their hair) and their legs as much as possible. Look decent - not trashy. Why,? Because women are beautiful, they can be a distraction. Men are to pay attention to the sermon not be gawking at some hotty. "Wow, look at her ...dang ... she's sitting with another girl ... maybe she isn't married?" ...
And so on and so forth, this man is captivated ... lust comes into his heart ... What was the sermon about ... I think he missed it today.
What is really silly to me is those Barristers wearing white wigs in British courtrooms! Courtrooms are a place where good and evil are sorted out, truth and justice found ... and I am sure people are praying in there too! God's looking down on them too. Maybe we should post that scripture in the front of the British Courts!

This post is really strange. Is that really where your thoughts are when you look at a woman? "Lust comes into his heart" is your fantasy. Women are people and should be regarded as such, not as sex objects.

And the comment about British courts is also very strange.

Don't judge by outward appearances.

a) We are not under law in the New Covenant.
b) We do not live in first century Corinth. They had completely different customs than we have today.

Paul's point is to not dress in a way that will offend others.
Paul's point was for a man to pray with his head uncovered!

3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.

9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Paul made it simply clear for all to understand- Ir a man prays with his head covered- He dishonors his head who is Christ.

If a married woman prays with her head uncovered, she dishonors her head, which is her husband.

And verse 16 tells us it was not just a corinth issue or culture issue- but as teaching for the whole church!

Christians are not under the law. The Holy Spirit directs us not to offend our neighbor. That may or may not include wearing hats in church. It depends where you are, what the local custom is, and what century you're living in.

Paul was living in the first century CE and was writing to the church in Corinth, which had similar customs to the other churches in the region. Did you really think that God cares about wearing hats in every church? In some churches in the US, it would be considered rude.

BTW, 1 Corinthians 11:4 says, "Any man who prays or prophesies with something on his head shames his head". Do you put on a hat every time that you pray or prophesy?

I prayed that the Chiefs win the Super Bowl. But I forgot to put on a hat! I hope that I won't be punished!!!

It seems this ordinance is for modisty.

But perhaps there is a deeper spiritual meaning, related to Christ and the Church, and the custom of wearing wedding vales.
No, it is for respect and the proper order of worship when the church gathers. I am sure we can gather ten spiritually mature individuals and gather 20 deeper spiritual meanings from this! I think I will stick with what God inspired through Paul! Especially when he closes the argument with teh fact that no one in Christianity teaches different.

Man is the image and glory of God.
Man Praying/ Speaking to God “should stand before God in Gods image...”
No head covering, as God has No head covering.
Men wear hats, out doors, in houses, in restaurants, in vehicles....yet when they enter the House of God, they remove their hat, and “stand before God in Gods image”.

1 Cor 11:
[7] For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

Glory to God,
Taken
What about when I am home by myself?

Paul was not teaching the Mosaic Law! He was teaching order in the Christian church!!!!!

So then according to you , this part of the bible is not profitable for doctrine, reproof and correction and instruction in righteousness, so that a man of god may be thoroughly furnished unto all good works!

In some churches in Amerioca not accepting practicing homosexuals as members is considered rude. Are you okay with that?

Yes you can. The only piece of clothing God inspired the inspired writers of Scripture to speak on was a head covering and then He also went on to inspire why it is needed.

I see no issue with you wearing a hat in your home as you desire.
That is perfectly fine! Paul is talking about conduct when the church gathers! If three guys meet in the backyard, sit by a fire cooking winers and decide to pray, they can keep their stetons on .

According to your first line here then, maybe it is okay now for people to steal and rape and pillage! After all maybe they also were for a different time and different culture. when you do this- you open pandoras box and cannot defend honestly what you consider the Word of God and what you consider an apostles opinion based on culture.
Don't tell me what I think. You clearly have misunderstood what I wrote. And I have reported your message to the staff.

I am putting you on ignore until you behave in a Christian manner.

Better shave your head then, to be sure you are in full compliance. I will however consider the spiritual meaning to all ordinances in order to avoid legalism.

It’s just when I get home from work and bless my food I often forget to take it off.

Jesus said...
Luke 12:
[22] And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.

I would say, be in awe entering Gods House of Prayer and Eating in thankfulness unto God the Provider and Remembrance of Jesus’ Salvation, is to also remember, He hears His sheep and is Faithful.

Glory to God,

Ronald, this is the stuff the religious leaders in Jesus day made a big deal of. Can you think of other religious folk from any religion/ organisation who make a big deal of appearance and clothing? who have strict codes for what constitutes profane and what constitutes holy?.....and we can push the line further, like what to eat and what not to, who to associate and who not, gender separation etc.

I think the list will go on indefinitely and all because of being entrapped in the self.....that's the best they can come up with.

What has become a tradition in British Parliament, and insult to tradition to not participate, had a more dubious beginning....for those who could afford wigs....from the patchy hair loss and scaly scalp, side effects from syphilis that was quite usual....as well lice...lack of usual washing....wigs became a status symbol for well to do...and fairly easy to maintain.
Early wigs made from animal hair actually was an instigator in men having lice.

I wouldn’t wear a hat in a Church . I think it would be disrespectful. But that’s just me.
