Israel reversed the role of God being the One who tests faith!

Jesus gave his Creator His rightful place.

And why don't demons exercise physical power over people on a regular basis?
I have no doubt demons do this .

The deception in the world is not that the devil doesn't exist, its in what way a accuser is revealed! Judas was one such false accuser but not a fallen angel as you would have it.

And by the way, would you place your Biblical understanding in the hands of a French poet, essayist, and art critic?

Enough said

My study notes do not offer an explanation. Thoughts?
Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit for the express purpose of being tempted by the devil, so that's what He was willing to be subject to.

Quote from Albert Barnes Commentary:
"When the first Adam was created he was subjected to the temptation of the devil, and he fell and involved the race in ruin: it was not improper that the second Adam - the Redeemer of the race - should be subjected to temptation, in order that it might be seen that there was no power that could alienate him from God; that there was a kind and a degree of holiness which no art or power could estrange from allegiance."

Do you appreciate how much non Biblical content you are reading into this Scripture to even arrive at your inference?
I'm doing no such thing. If you believe this is true, prove it. Show the Biblical content you are reading into this Scripture as I am directly quoting Scripture.

This subject isn't as straightforward as those who believe in a fallen evil angel might make it seem.

From my experience, directly confronting this belief rarely leads to understanding. Instead, a better approach is to encourage them to explore the context and the reasons behind the Spirit leading Christ into the wilderness....this can be a good starting point for discussion.
So much eisegesis.

Revealed in the Book of Matthew Chapter 4 . I read the text and I see what is wrote why would I doubt what is wrote prima facia ?

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
And by the way, would you place your Biblical understanding in the hands of a French poet, essayist, and art critic?
If you have a list of the Devil's tricks from greatest to least you can list them . :crossword:

In Luke 4:6 and 9 it reads, depending on the translation, that the Devil took Jesus up or led Jesus. If the devil led Jesus to a high place, it means Jesus followed the devil.

If the devil had physical power over Jesus, why didn't he throw Jesus to his death? And why don't demons exercise physical power over people on a regular basis?

My study notes do not offer an explanation. Thoughts?
Its none of the above . satan was simply ALLOWED to TEMPT CHRIST .
just like the serpent has now tempted much of christendom to believe a lie . a lie which he says
will usher peace n safety unto the world .

What a provoking question after reading the replies here is my take.
This is a profound and complex question. Let's examine it carefully using Biblical references and provide an opinion based on Scripture.

1. Did Jesus Follow Satan?

The Bible unequivocally shows that Jesus did not follow Satan. Jesus consistently resisted Satan and upheld the will of God throughout His earthly ministry.

Biblical Reference: Matthew 4:1-11 (The Temptation of Jesus)

After His baptism, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. Satan offered Jesus various temptations:
  • Turning stones into bread to satisfy His hunger (Matthew 4:3-4)
  • Throwing Himself off the temple to test God's protection (Matthew 4:5-7)
  • Bowing down to Satan in exchange for worldly power (Matthew 4:8-10)
In every instance, Jesus resisted, using Scripture to rebuke Satan:
  • "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4, quoting Deuteronomy 8:3)
  • "You shall not put the Lord your God to the test." (Matthew 4:7, quoting Deuteronomy 6:16)
  • "You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve." (Matthew 4:10, quoting Deuteronomy 6:13)
Satan was ultimately defeated in this encounter: "Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him." (Matthew 4:11)
This demonstrates that Jesus was never under Satan's influence or authority. Instead, Jesus maintained His divine authority and commitment to God.

2. Did Satan Have Physical Power Over Jesus?

Satan had no ultimate power over Jesus. However, during Jesus' time on earth, Satan attempted to challenge and oppose Him. It is important to distinguish between the temporary testing that Jesus underwent as part of His mission and the reality of His ultimate authority over Satan.

Biblical Reference: Luke 22:53 (The Arrest of Jesus)

When Jesus was arrested, He said: "This is your hour, and the power of darkness."
This verse indicates that, for a limited time, Satan was allowed to influence events leading to Jesus' crucifixion. However, this was part of God's sovereign plan for salvation. Jesus willingly submitted to the suffering and death on the cross to fulfill God's purpose, not because of any power Satan had over Him.

Biblical Reference: John 10:18

Jesus emphasized His control over His own life and death: "No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from My Father."
This confirms that even during His suffering, Jesus retained divine authority.

MY .......Opinion and Conclusion

Based on the Bible, Jesus neither followed Satan nor was He under Satan's physical power. Jesus' life was marked by complete obedience to God and victory over sin and Satan. The temptation in the wilderness and the events of the crucifixion demonstrate that:
  • Jesus willingly faced opposition and testing from Satan as part of God's redemptive plan.
  • Satan's power was always limited and subordinate to God's sovereignty.
Jesus' mission was to overcome Satan, sin, and death (1 John 3:8), and He succeeded through His perfect obedience, sacrifice, and resurrection.
In summary, the narrative of Scripture is clear: Jesus was always superior to Satan, both spiritually and physically, and never yielded to his authority.
Just my views based on scripture.

What a provoking question

Thank you. I like to provoke thought.

While I totally agree with this, the verses referenced in the OP state otherwise. How do you reconcile this?

The language in Luke 4:6 and 9 (depending on the translation) can suggest that Satan "led" or "took" Jesus to different places. However, this does not mean that Jesus willingly "followed" Satan in a submissive sense then satans "leading" was part of the test Jesus underwent as the Son of God. Theologically, this temptation served to affirm Jesus’ sinlessness and His triumph over Satan, demonstrating His authority as the second Adam (Romans 5:19; 1 Corinthians 15:45).

Side Note:
In the Bible the only way I can rationalize a response to questions is by looking at each Book as a Book.
Why all show teachings and represent person of topic. Its important in my opinion to take each book in the Bible and rationalize its intent
in the Book, and for each Book in the Bible. I used to look at the Bible as a Book for decades and decades, until my wise son who is Autistic.
Explained in clear innocent context. The Bible is a Book of Books, not a Book of Quotes. He then went on to explain when looking up scripture, important to encompass the book its contained in as a solid reference of context.
Not sure that answered your question ?

Welcome @RootedWithGod to the forums.

Although you didn’t answer my question, it was a good answer. sml

If we read into the text as @Stumpmaster wrote that Jesus let himself be tempted and only in that limited context was led by the devil to the heights, it may give us some comfort. However, the text does not support this inference.

Yes, Jesus was led to the desert by the HS. However, this does not extend to the devil working in conjunction with the Holy Spirit’s plan for the testing. Rather, the devil took the opportunity of Jesus being weak to temp him is inferred.

Another important point, just because Scripture identifies this time as the time that the devil tempted Jesus does not mean there were not other times. This led to the controversial film, The Last Temptation of Christ.

If anything could be inferred from Scripture not explicitly written about Jesus formative years it is that all of Heavens Armies would be fully deployed to prevent the 1/3 that fell from sabotaging in any way, Christ’s mission on Earth.

Supposing the devil was unaware of who Jesus was until the baptism, it is not reasonable to suppose the devil would stop at this 1 instance to temp him, e.g., tempting Peter to rebuke Jesus and the retort to call Simon by a 3rd name, Satan himself. Thoughts?

Another poster addressed the physical power of demons over people question. When I get time, I’ll circle back to that.

If I had to guess to answer the question ( and para-phrase scripture). I would assume that the same protection we have when we seek the Fathers strength and Guidance. So did Jesus during his trials.
I think that The Trinity create a shield, not from Sin. But from the temptation of sin. For what keeps Demons from just body jumping and infiltrating us all. Is indeed all three in one. Also all three in us as one. I am not suggesting the Trinity needs us, I am suggesting that we are one with the Trinity when we accept the conditions that allow us the Grace, Power and as I mentioned a Shield.
I would say that among all people Jesus would have had a very clear idea of the shield that protected him as well.

When I see scripture that supports these thoughts. You get a visual of a Man walking alone in the Desert naked.
And then desiring not to need shelter, food and water. When it would be impossible to do so. Unless you had a way to easily remedy these things. I have to then view that ourselves and Jesus also had the ability to find what was needed because it existed and does exist.
Meaning, Demons themselves would have one hell of a time ( pun intended ) trying to invade those with the shield of the Trinity with them.
Yes I am aware that Father, Son and Holy Spirit could be seen as not complete when Jesus was here. Those that doubt this should also be aware that God is Timeless and so shall be the Trinity as well. The Bible never really defines but Jesus is eternal as scripture states.
So as God was on Earther so was the Trinity, and ergo Jesus was protected in the same way that we are.
Maybe that helped answer a little bit more ? sml

He didn't fall into temptation. Therefore, he didn't have any power over him. Jesus was already filled with the Holy Spirit.

Nothing passes through God's hand and God already had a plan for how he would give his son. God allowed the test, knowing He would still win.

God cannot deny HIMSELF , HIS TRUTH . HE is truth .
man fell , The word became flesh and prevailed .
GOD always knew what HE would have to do to save man who cannot save himself .
Lord who then can be saved . With man this is IM THA POSSIBLE . But NOT with GOD .
Said the WORD of GOD who had become flesh . Me thinks its high time
we start reminding all that breathes air , was born of woman to BELIEVE ON HIM .
Hey duckie . I was wondering if you have noticed the same thing i have .
It seems in these latter years many have been doing all
NOT TO REMIND ALL of the DIRE NEED TO BELIEVE ON JESUS THE CHRIST
but rather trying to implant all kinds of ideas about how those WHO DO NOT BELEIVE will be saved .
IT seems i see that a lot in these last hours . RATHER than reminding the church about the DIRE NEED
to actually tell peoples of the DIRE NEED TO BELIEVE JESUS IS THE CHRIST
they go about doing all to convince the church , HEY its just not necessary as they pump
out all kinds of ideas about HOW folks be saved without HAVING TO BELEIVE .
That sure dont sound LIKE what CHRIST taught and later the apostels taught .
THEY all sure seemed so very adamant about the DIRE NEED TO BELEIVE and even warned
what would come upon those who BELIEVED NOT . ever get the feeling we are being seduced to beleive a lie , cause i sure do .

We all--all of humanity since Adam and Eve and original sin, have been subjected to Satan, the ruler of this world. Jesus, as Savior, simply subjected Himself also to Satan to save us. But God has rules and limits on Satan.
