[1Co 14:22 KJV] 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying [serveth] not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

Tongues was the gifted ability to speak in a foreign language.

It was a sign to confirm the authenticity of the message and those who preached it.

Tongues were meant to be a sign to the unbelievers, that the message of the Lord was to be believed.

[1Co 13:8 KJV] 8 Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away.

Tongues have ceased and are no longer needed. We have the completed word of God to be believed.

[1Co 14:23 KJV] 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in [those that are] unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?

I personally went to a church that spoke in tongues and can confirm that what they spoke was nothing but gibberish.

Most who speak in tongues do not know what they are saying. An interpreter is needed, but there never seems to be one around in full gospel churches. I asked my tongue speaking friend if he knew what he was saying and he said no. I asked him if he recorded himself and he said no. I've read stories of people speaking in tongues and a visiting person from a foreign country was there and the tongues speaker was speaking their language.

Did you directly witness this?

I just knew some individuals in different churches that spoke in tongues, I have nothing new to say. I even had one try laying hands on me for me to speak tongues. I didn't. I read up on tongues and stories because I did have a theory that another language was spoken.

So you are a cessationist. Paul said that we can speak in tongues of anfgels and men. So there is an angelic tongue as well.

If you are going to be consistent in exegeting the corinthian passage then you must also believe that teaching and knowledge have also passed away as well.

Personally I believe teh gift of tongues is still valid. It is the least of the gifts and meant to edify one's self so they may edify the church. It is also the most misunderstood and abused gift god gave men.

Tongues was the gifted ability to speak in a foreign language.

Here is where the confusion comes in....

You have one of the 9 spiritual gifts, that is the "gift of Tongues".........it means you have been miraculously given the ability to speak a foreign language (a tongue) .

Then......

There is a "prayer language"...... that is for "self edification"..... and this is that, which you find being confused with the GIFT of Tongues.

Many have a prayer language...........but very few have the GIFT of tongues.

I knew a pastor in the 1970s, Rev. Norman Allensworth, who had a ministry to the Jews. Radio program and door to door in Jewish neighborhoods. He and his wife previously worked in China and then Thailand.

He attended a synagogue one day. Upon leaving he was shaking the hand of the rabbi. The pastor suddenly said something in a different tongue or language.

The rabbi was shocked and told him you spoke in Hebrew and said "there is something lacking in your worship."

Rev. Allensworth was not Pentecostal or Charismatic. Just an evangelical pastor.

Many years ago, my husband spoke to someone (a Catholic priest, of all people!) who had witnessed an instance of this.
He had been with a colleague in Belgium who had prayed for a man seriously injured in a road accident. This colleague prayed in tongues. Afterwards the man said that he had spoken in Turkish and had told him about the love of Jesus.

Quite amazing. Just like the pastor I knew spoke in Hebrew to the rabbi.

[1Co 13:1 KJV] 1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
He didnt say he did speak with tongues of angels or that the church would...........he said though

[Eph 4:11 KJV] 11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Teachers are set in the body of Christ and is not passed away

I dont see this as saying there is a prayer language

[1Co 14:14-16 KJV] 14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?

These passages are talking about the inability to understand

Tongues was a sign to demonstrate for the Church age, that the things of God would viewed as foolishness, as if drunk on wine. The message was and still is, that the things of God--including the scriptures--would require spiritual translation, not by anyone, but specifically by those with that Holy Spirit gift.

Paul was an example, gifted with the knowledge to explain it.

I thought about this more
Paul said THOUGH he spoke with the tongues of angels..........can be read as EVEN IF I spoke with tongues of angels
He was not saying he spoke tongues of angels
