Do you think that's true?

I think there’s a good measure of truth in it.

What if a man listens to more than one genre?

I’ll put your question in parallel with this: What if a man reads more than one genre of literature?

Can observing what a person enjoys taking in give us an idea of what that person is like on the inside? Can observing what a person does not enjoy give us an idea of what that person is like on the inside?

I think it can do that.

Can it tell us everything about what a person is like on the inside?

I don’t think it can do that.

I think that sounds wise. But then, what does it tell us? If a man listens to satanic music, but also gospel music, what does it mean?

In your hypothetical, I would want to find out why the man is listening to satanic music and gospel music.

***

I recall an event dating back over 35 years ago; probably closer to 40. The pastor played some satanic music for a small group, of which I was a party, after the church service was over. No one objected or expressed any concern about it being played.

[It wasn’t played for the purpose of enjoyment. It was played for the purpose of education, as part of a lecture offered to parents on the subject of child rearing. The lecture had been announced several weeks - perhaps even months - ahead of time by the pastor. All who signed up to attend were made aware beforehand that the lecture would include the playing of music, the nature of the music, and handouts containing song lyrics.]

If I hadn’t shared the information I placed in brackets with you, what would your reaction to my story have been?

I would wonder why they didn't object to the music being played. How many of them actually enjoyed it? They probably wouldn't have told you. Things like that are kept secret.

If we didn’t know why they were listening to it there would have been an enormous amount of wondering going on.

I don’t know. Recalling the makeup of the group, I doubt that many, if any, enjoyed it. I didn’t.

They probably wouldn't have told you. Things like that are kept secret.

No one ever told me that they enjoyed it. I do recall many commenting on how shocked they were at the lyrics. Most of the parents had teenage children. My child at the time would have been around two years old.

Really? I thought they would be indifferent to it. It's the "world", right? Who cares why they do what they do? They're damned and we're saved.

You never can tell. Men's hearts hold shadows darker than any tainted creature.

Yeah, but the lyrics are a window of the darker parts of the human psyche. They exist within us all, despite being a Christian or anything else. The Christian movies and music don't land because they purposefully ignore this aspect of who we are.

Some parents, perhaps even a few of the parents in the small group that day, may be indifferent to it. As you said, if any of them enjoyed it they probably weren’t going to make it known publicly at church. The same could be said about any who are indifferent.

You never can tell. Men's hearts hold shadows darker than any tainted creature.

Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Parents who enjoy listening to satanic music or are indifferent about it will eventually say something that reveals their heart on the matter.

Did you by any chance happen to watch the movie Nefarious? It was released in 2023.

Hmm... can't say that I have.

It’s not a “typical“ Christian movie but the script was written by a man (Steve Deace) who self-identifies as Christian. It wasn’t marketed as a Christian movie. It was intentionally marketed as a Horror movie, in order to reach a wider audience with a Christian message.

I watched it. I don’t generally recommend Christian movies and television programs (because too many liberties are typically taken with them) and I don’t want to imprint Hollywood’s version in my head. I would, however, be able to recommend this particular movie.

It’s getting late and well past my bedtime. I’ll end my posting for the evening with this thought for your consideration: Not all secular music is satanic and not all Christian music contains biblical theology.

Goodnight.

Well, that's probably good then. Most Christies movies are terrible. The low budget ones, I mean. I'll check it out. There aren't many good movies these days.

Goodnight, Matthias.

I like a great melody found within a well written song.
This can be Singer-Songwriter... it can be a Group, it can be Classical.. It can be Hymns or Contemporary Christian, it can be Jazz.. ect, ect.

Hey Riven
This thread reminded me of a couple of great song threads on the other forum and many moons ago.
Haven't ever seen anything like it again.

I think I'm close to @Matthias.
Anything except jazz - can't understand it although my brother says it speaks.
Oh. And rap. I thought it would last a couple of years and then die out.

Classical rock, pop.
Some heavy metal but the Bon Jovi type.

And I still love U2.
And Coldplay.

Here's a great video for both the music and the location.

Unusual sounding guitar.
I think @Matthias plays guitar ... can't remember.

I’ve never even touched a guitar. You might be thinking of Johann. I remember him saying that his deceased wife was Jewish and that he played the guitar.

Sometimes I wonder if there is a infinite amount of music genre's that could be created or if there is only a finite amount that could be created.

Probably the latter.
