Joseph was a much older man and likely was a widow with his own children we are not following Disney here where they are teenagers in love.Joseph outright rejected her until an Angel told him to marry her or she likely would of been stoned to death she need to be protected. When Jesus brothers and sisters are mentioned they are there with "the mother of Jesus" not their mother that is how it is written.

Why would they be married but not have sex?
It's not that unusual for married couples to abstain from sex during pregnancy anyway (either for fear of 'disturbing' the pregnancy, or just because it's too uncomfortable for the woman). Joseph probably regarded his wife as 'off limits' while carrying a child conceived by the Holy Spirit, because it was drummed into the Jews from an early age to steer well clear of holy things.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding but it is my understanding that they were married and then abstained from sex. Sometime thereafter angels appeared to both Mary and then Joseph to share with them the good news. Why didn't they have sex AFTER they were married and BEFORE they were visited by angels?
Matthew's gospel is quite clear that they were visited by angels before getting married.

Deborah, I like your analysis. You captured a couple of points that were at the back of my mind also.

Hello Jesussaves,
Why do you say Joseph was "a much older man?"

When Jesus brothers and sisters are mentioned they are there with "the mother of Jesus" not their mother that is how it is written.

Here are a couple of verses concerning his mother and brethren

Psalm 69:8 I am become a stranger unto my brethren, and an alien unto my mother's children.

John 7:5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.

They are still his brethren as Josephs children. You yourself will become a adopted brother or sister in Christ.

Psalm 69 I pray it myself.

When life overwhelms you, it’s normal to look for comfort. As Christians, we should search in two places: God’s presence and God’s word.

Trials will require you to shift your focus. Instead of looking all around you, or living in fear of your circumstances, you can look to the God who holds you. That begins with recognizing who God is.

There are so many places you can go in God’s Word to find His comfort and peace in any storm. His Word is given to us as the rock to build our lives upon. We can turn to it when life happens and seek relief. The place that many turn to the most is the Psalms.

In the Psalms every emotion is given honest expression. Psalm 69 does this especially well.
This psalm describes the common human experience of suffering and feeling overwhelmed. It begins with an urgent cry for salvation. David uses imagery of drowning in his despair. We see in verses 6-12 that the psalmist is experiencing suffering at least in part due to his faithful obedience to God. Throughout this psalm, the author raises his lament to God and asks God to help him, to save him. “But I pray to you, Lord” the psalmist promises. He asks God to “come near and rescue me” (verse 16) and closes the psalm with great praise and worship to God.

Prayer leads to praise

How can the psalmist close such a lengthy lament and desperation with praise? He can praise God because He knows that God has heard his prayers. “The Lord hears the poor” (verse 33) the psalmist confirms in the midst of his final stanza of praise and worship.

The Lord hears His people. The Lord restores and strengthens as prayer moves us from looking in despair at the situation to seeing the goodness of God who not only will deliver David from his enemies but will restore Zion and “build the cities of Judah… (so that) the descendants of His servants shall inherit it, and those who love His Name may dwell there and possess it” (verses 35 and 36).
The power of prayer

Prayer acknowledges who God is, His character and His worth. It acknowledges who we are, sinners desperate for His grace. And it draws us close to God, the source of our comfort, our strength, and our peace.

If you are suffering today, go to God in prayer. He is listening, and He hears His people.
Psalm 69 powerfully demonstrates what calling out to God does. It transforms a man who feels himself “sink(ing) in deep mire” (verse 2) to a man who proclaims the promises of God for not only himself but for future generations. This is what being in the presence of God does. It lifts our eyes and fills our hearts with praise.

Near the end of the psalm, David is no longer overwhelmed by the severity of his circumstances. He is overwhelmed with the promises of God. Joy has replaced his despair so much so that he proclaims those “ who seek God, your hearts shall live” (verse32).
As you read through Psalm 69, may your heart be filled with the assurance that God is near when we are overwhelmed. Our honest cries of despair do not distance us from God; they draw us near to God. May your heart rejoice that scripture is filled with men and women of God who in their brokenness cried out to God and God always heard and responded to their cries. In the midst of it all, Psalm 69 reminds us of the power of praise to transform our hearts and gives us perspective to trust and see beyond the present reality.

Its David lamenting

There is plenty of information out there explaining her virginity it up to you whether to believe it or not.

The Gospel of Luke states the birth was "through the power of the Holy Spirit" and scripture references like Matthew 13:55-56 are interpreted to mean Jesus' "brothers" and "sisters" were likely Joseph's children from a previous marriage or close relatives.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

You're missing my point.
What point am I missing, compared to the one you are missing? :no reply:

A virgin birth was prophesied......if Joseph had marital relations with Mary before Jesus was born, that would have taken away her virginity.....you do understand what her virginity signified......? Purity...holiness.

The holiness of the child in her womb could not be disrespected. Joseph took Mary to be his wife for all intents and purposes because to become pregnant whilst not married was a punishable offence. He saved her from that fate but in full knowledge of why he was to do so.....to legitimise the son that he would accept as his own. Joseph and Mary were God’s choice to raise his precious son. Joseph respected God’s arrangement. AndJ Jesus had siblings as Jews believed that children were God’s gift. (Psalm 127:3-5)

What is missing here?
Mary was a virgin who was to give birth to the son of God. If she had not been a virgin when Jesus was born, that would have ruined the prophesy, since she had to be a virgin when she gave birth proving that no man was responsible for the pregnancy. In Israel, a woman had to provide proof of her virginity after consummation.
A woman couldn't prove her virginity after her hymen was broken during consummation.
Which is why a bride was examined by the women in her family or village prior to the marriage.
Joseph showed self control and respect for God’s arrangement, and for the woman who would be the mother of the promised Messiah.
The fact that Jesus had siblings shows that they had a normal married life after his birth.
Joseph and Mary didn't have to leave their home out of fear her pregnancy would shame them as having occurred before marriage.

If God begat Himself upon her, she would still be virgin.
They could have wed with none the wiser. Because the test of her virginity would show she was still virgin. And by the time she would have showed in her pregnancy they would already be wed.

There is nothing in the testament that indicates Joseph was married prior to betrothal to Mary.

Why would they be married but not have sex?

Matthew 1:24-25

English Standard Version

24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

but knew her not until she had given birth to a son.

Joseph and Mary did have sexual relations and had children according to the Will of GOD

There does not exist a single hint in Scripture that Joseph had children outside of his union with his wife Mary.

Are you a catholic or similar?

Notice a complete absence of them at the cross - where were they when Mary stood there by herself with John. Why did John have to be asked by Jesus to take care of Mary .Where were her children.Wouldn't you have been there if you were his true brother or sister. They were completely absent from that scene. Why did Jesus ask John to take care of her if she had so many children shouldn't he of asked his brothers and sisters first?Unless you want to claim he had a horrible family.I know I would of been there if I was his brother and would of taken care of her he would not of had to ask John it would be a given.I would of made sure they were all there with me but that's not what happened it fell on John. Not one of them were there to take care of her because they were not his biological siblings.

JESUS own step brothers and step sisters did not believe Him.

According to the scripture, they were married but hadn't had sex. That was all before being visited by angels. You don't find that odd?
