I have seen a few false interpretations of John 18:36 being shared on this forum, so I thought I would show the correct interpretation of the verse.
John 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.” 37 Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”
Some seem to think that what Jesus was saying here is that His kingdom is not here yet, but will come in the future. That is not at all what He was saying. Why would He tell Pilate that He was a king back then AT THAT TIME if His kingdom didn't exist yet? He was a king without a kingdom? Of course not.
What did He mean when He said His kingdom is not of this world? Some seem to think that He meant that His kingdom is not in the world now, but that's not what the phrase "not of this world" means. The following passages show where Jesus said He was not of this world and His followers were not of this world, yet they were in the world. So, being "not of this world" does not mean "not in this world".
John 15:18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
John 17:4 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
In the same way that Jesus and His disciples were not of this world while being in the world, His kingdom is not of this world while being in the world. To be "not of this world" means to not do things according to this evil world's ways. His kingdom did not originate from this world and its evil ways. Instead, as Jesus said, it is "not from here". It is instead from heaven. His kingdom is a heavenly kingdom rather than a worldly kingdom and it is in the world on the earth that we are in right now because we are in the world right now and we are in His kingdom that did not come with observation (Luke 17:20) because it is a spiritual, heavenly kingdom rather than a worldly kingdom like the kingdoms of this world.
