What can be learned from this account about life after death?
[Luke 16:20 KJV] "And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,"
[Luke 16:22 KJV] "And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;"
[Luke 16:23 KJV] "And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom."
[Luke 16:24 KJV] "And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame."
[Luke 16:25 KJV] "But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented."
[Luke 16:26 KJV] "And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that [would come] from thence."
[Luke 16:27 KJV] "Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:"
[Luke 16:28 KJV] "For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment."...........Lazarus and the rich man isn't a parable. It doesn't say it is; it is too specific in details and can be understood clearly, which isn't the case for parables. This isn't figurative either. This is a literal account that can give us insight as to what we will experience after death. I don't label this as a parable or dismiss it as being figurative, so therefore, I can learn about our life after death from the riches found in this account.

I will go thru the verses that give us some insight to life after death:
Verse 22 In this dispensation we don't go to Abraham's bosom; we go to heavenly places
Verse 23 We will have eyesight
Verse 24 We have tongues and can taste
Verse 25 We have memory of our lifetime
Verse 28 We are aware of our family
Verse 30 We have concern for our loved ones welfare

We can find a little more elsewhere in scripture:
[2 Corinthians 12:2 KJV] "I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.".........Paul couldn't tell if he was in or out of his body; was that because the third heaven where God dwells was a familiar environment to him?

[Revelation 6:9 KJV] "And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:"
[Revelation 6:10 KJV] "And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?".........Our souls have voices that can speak.

Our resurrected bodies will be like Christ's........[Philippians 3:21 KJV] "Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."............Here are some verses, from which, we can know what our resurrected bodies will be like.........[John 20:27 KJV] "Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust [it] into my side: and be not faithless, but believing."........Christ can speak. Christ has a body in the same form as it was before resurrection; his appearance was recognized by Thomas. He has a tangible body that could be touched.........[Luke 24:42 KJV] "And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb."
[Luke 24:43 KJV] "And he took [it], and did eat before them."..........Christ can eat. We will have the same ability in our resurrected bodies, so I hope we will have sushi!

Jesus Christ was speaking to his disciples in the present of the Pharisees and scribes prior to the account at Luke 16:19-31; and, taught lessons by telling this story through the means of parables or illustrations.-Matthew 13:34, 35; Luke 8:10.

In this illustration, the rich man depicts the Jewish clergy who were well provided for with spiritual provisions; who considered themselves children of the kingdom, clothed in purple/fine linen, very self-righteous; and, were proud of being Abraham’s offspring. (Matthew 23:27, 28; Romans 3:1, 2; Revelation 19:8) The beggar, Lazarus, depicts the Jewish common people, who were despised by the clergy. Being neglected, they were hungering and thirsting for righteousness (spiritually ill); and, who appreciated their need of Christ Jesus.-John 7:49; Matthew 5:6; Mark 2:17.

Ths is a symbolic death of the rich man (Clergy class) and of Lazarus (common people class) pictured a change taking place in the relative positions of these two classes. This should be no surprise to us because the Bible shows that death can be used symbolically, representing people as dying or having died though still alive, meaning thereby that a great change in one’s life or course of action. Compare Romans 6:2, 11-13; 7:4-6; Colossians 3:3; 1 Timothy 5:6. A death, or change from former conditions, happened when Jesus fed the Lazarus class spiritually; and, they thus came into the favor of the greater Abraham: God. At the same time, the false religious leaders “died” with respect to having God’s favor. Being cast off, they suffered torments when Christ’s followers, after Pentecost, forcefully exposed their evil works. (Acts 7:51-57) So this illustration is not literal and does not teach that some dead persons are tormented in a literal fiery hell.

Furthermore, it is not reasonable or scriptural to believe that a man suffers torment simply because he is rich, wears good clothing and has plenty to eat. It is not scriptural to believe that one is blessed with heavenly life just because he is a beggar. Jesus said nothing about the rich man’s living a degraded life worthy of “fiery” punishment; the man’s failing was that he did not spiritually feed the poor. Further, Jesus said nothing about Lazarus’ doing good things-things that clearly would merit his going to heaven.

Finally, “No man has ascended into heaven but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man.” (John 3:13) The resurrection of the dead did not start at that time.

You are right the Pharisees were self-righteous and did think they were righteous based on being Abraham's descendants, but where did you come up with Lazarus and the rich man being symbolic of anything? To make this assertion there should be something indicating that or Jesus would have to provide it.

It is assumption to say the rich man went to hell simply because he was rich. The passage doesnt say that..................[Luke 16:27 KJV] "Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:"
[Luke 16:28 KJV] "For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment."
[Luke 16:29 KJV] "Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them."
[Luke 16:30 KJV] "And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.".................The rich man didnt testify to his brothers so they would repent and not come into hell like himself. He wanted Lazarus to be sent to his brothers to testify and when Abraham told him that they should hear Moses and the prophets the rich man said no to that. Did he reject Moses and the prophets and never repented? His was told his brothers didnt repent from hearing Moses and the prophets

Lazarus didnt go to heaven he went to Abraham's bosom. Abraham's bosom is in the heart of the earth. Jesus said he would be in paradise...............[Luke 23:43 KJV] "And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise."..............Jesus went to Abraham;s bosom in the heart of the earth.........[Matthew 12:40 KJV] "For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.".................The dead didnt go to heaven like us, their souls went to Abraham's bosom in the heart (center) of the earth
