Noem needs to go
CABINET MEETING: President Donald Trump held a Cabinet meeting today as his administration contends with backlash over its aggressive and deadly immigration enforcement tactics in Minnesota. Unlike past meetings, Trump did not invite Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Attorney General Pam Bondi or some other top officials who have been drawing recent scrutiny to speak. He also did not take questions from reporters afterward.
What to know about the latest developments in Minnesota:
A representative for Alex Pretti's family confirmed Wednesday he is the man seen confronting ICE agents in a new video shot 11 days before his death.
Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents fired their weapons during Pretti's fatal shooting over the weekend, according to a government report sent to Congress and obtained by CBS News that does not mention Pretti reaching for his firearm. Those agents were wearing body cameras, officials say.
Minnesota officials said Pretti was a lawful gun owner with a permit to carry. He had no criminal record.
Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the situation told CBS News some at the Department of Homeland Security are increasingly concerned about the agency's reputation. Noem is facing internal scrutiny, but is not expected to lose her job, sources said. Bovino was demoted to a post outside Minnesota.
A group of activists is calling on people across the U.S. to participate in a "National Shutdown" on Friday to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Court rules Noem ending protected status for Venezuelans in U.S. was illegal
A federal appeals court ruled late Wednesday that the Trump administration acted illegally when it ended legal protections that gave hundreds of thousands of people from Venezuela permission to live and work in the United States.
A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court ruling that found Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem exceeded her authority when she ended temporary protected status for Venezuelans.
Judge: "ICE has likely violated more court orders in January 2026 than some federal agencies have violated in their entire existence"
