SteVen, what kind of ministry are you in? Are you a Pastor or elder? Can you give example? There was one the disciples couldn't heal Jesus told them why. So are we talking about healing? Also, I was shocked to find out it is my responsibility to call the church and elders for them to anoint me with oil and to pray the prayer of faith. Also that it provides forgiveness of sins.

James 5:14-15 (KJV) Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
The only ministry I do is when I hear God ask me to do something. Which is few and far between.
So, nothing official at this point. I'm not burdening myself with ministry.

I was never a Pastor. Although I had a Pastor that said I could do it.
Mostly because of my ability to teach adult Bible classes. I also did prison ministry for a few years.
I was elected to Elder in the church I grew up in. I learned my lesson. I'll never do that again. (God willing)

Currently I post challenging topics on this forum. 300+ topics and counting.

If it is healing you are talking about, let me ask you a question, can an individual receive healing if they really think it was for the 12 chosen and not for them? If the faith to believe is missing shouldn't we ask as this man did to help his unbelief?
Mark 9:24 (KJV) And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
I think Jesus helped his unbelief.
Theoretically, unbelief will thwart anyone from being helped.
Realistically, God can heal whomever and whenever He pleases.

But if I interviewed someone for prayer and they said they didn't believe healing was for today,
I would hold off unless God was pressing me to move forward.

Good questions, thanks.

For those interested, we should talk more about the methodology of prayer ministry.
I mentioned the interview above.

without organized religion
organized religion has nothing to do with healing.. this so called recipe. yes we pray in Jesus name . its Divine healing not Divine healers . i hope i am wrong but i almost get the sense that if the recipe is right ..which means all will be healed ..which is not correct we dont know God will . here is my challenge if someone has the right recipe go to the nursing home to the alzhimers unit start praying .

in mark 9:23 all things are possible to him who believes. the next words is Lord i believe help my unbelief . a lady in our church had terminal lung cancer a tumor the size of a grapefruit . they sent her home to die,, they studied her case then trued her on a pill . the next scan cancer gone she still takes the pill .she is still kicking my point is some are healed with out medicine.. some are healed with medicine . its the effectual freverent prayer of a righteous man that avails much.. God does the healing Not man. we can ask God for healing not say in Jesus name and if its his will he will heal .

my mom was healed from cancer later got alzhimer passed away . it wasnt because of the wrong recipe.. it was her time to go

AGREE

My emphasis in saying "without organized religion" is that the LORD healed me outside of a church building and i did not call for the elders, neither did i receive any medical treatment from doctors/hospital/etc

AGREE = which ever Way the LORD chooses

Are the promises in John 14:12-14 true?

I've been suppressing my level of disappointment for some time.
- We are promised to do greater things than Jesus did.
- And whatever we ask in His name, He will do it. (sigh)

John 14:12-14 NIV
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing,
and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Well we are told why in many places but Christ said it best in Matthew, here and things have not changed. Reading chapter 15 might give you a bit more insight too. When was the last time you heard in church the binding of Satan it was included iin the sending out to heal. Whos words do you hear being taught in churches except for twice a year?

Matthew 15:8-9 (KJV) This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

I can relate with your discouragement. When I first got saved I thought all Christians heard from God and they would teach me how to as well. I also thought everyone in the church would love and accept me even though I was a stoner/hood/badboy type. Imagine my surprise when I found neither was true. No one was hearing from God and I felt alone and rejected everytime I attended a service. Higher concepts like Jn 14 and the unity of the body were way above me. I just wanted to be accepted and loved as a brother. The disappointment caused my faith to crash numerous times. It took years of the Lord's patience to establish me in the faith. Thank God for His loving kindness!

May they will be done Father - not my will.Your will must align with the Father.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen

That's a good point, and true.
But the scripture in John 14 doesn't offer any caveats.
If we step out in our God-given authority we should have what we ask for.
That's what it says.

No, that isn't how it works. That's what happens when you take verses out of context. You must take all that the Bible says about prayer into account.

Certainly not for someone who says, "no wonder I don't trust the Bible"!
AI Overview

John 14:12–14 features
Jesus promising that believers will perform the same works He did, and even "greater works," because He is returning to the Father and sending the Holy Spirit. This means that through prayer in His name, Jesus will act to glorify the Father, enabling followers to spread the gospel globally.
Key Meaning and Implications:
  • Greater Works: This does not mean more powerful miracles than Jesus, but a greater scope (geographic and numeric impact) of ministry enabled by the Holy Spirit after His ascension.
  • Works in His Name:Asking "in my name" refers to praying in accordance with Jesus's character and will, rather than a formula to obtain selfish desires
    .
    • Result: The primary purpose of these works is that the Father may be glorified through the Son

Can you move mountains?
And do greater works than Jesus did?

Does your "whole-Bible" view negate what these verses plainly say?

It's my opinion that "greater things" mean we will reach a larger audience but I could be wrong. As for the rest, I think your focus needs adjusting. You should focus on what it means to be "in my name" It’s a statement of relationship and authorization, not a magical phrase or mystical incantation we tack on at the end of a prayer
Let's take a look:

The phrase “in the name of” carries a very specific and rich meaning. It does not simply mean “using someone’s name as a label.” Instead, it expresses authority, representation, presence, and power—all centered on Jesus.

Here are the core meanings as the New Testament uses them:

1. Acting with Jesus’ authority

To do something “in the name of Jesus” means acting by His authority, the way an ambassador acts on behalf of a king.
Example:

  • “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” (Acts 3:6)
Peter isn’t just saying Jesus’ name—he is invoking Jesus’ authority to heal.

2. Representing Jesus

To act “in His name” means you are doing something as His representative or in alignment with His will.
Example:

  • “Whatever you do… do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Col. 3:17)
This means to live in a way that reflects who Jesus is.

3. Invoking Jesus’ power and presence
In the ancient world, a “name” represented the character and power of the person.
So doing something “in His name” meant calling upon the real power of the risen Christ.

Example:

  • “In my name they will cast out demons.” (Mark 16:17)
This is about Jesus’ power being active through His followers.

4. Identifying yourself with Jesus
When Christians are baptized “in the name of Jesus,” it means belonging to Him and entering into His covenant.

Example:

  • “Be baptized… in the name of Jesus Christ.” (Acts 2:38)
This marks a person as belonging to Jesus’ community and kingdom.

5. Acting under divine authorization

This echoes Old Testament usage where prophets or priests acted “in the name of the Lord.”
In the NT, Jesus’ name is the divine name through which God acts.

Summary
In the New Testament, “in the name of Jesus” means:

  • by His authority
  • in His power
  • as His representative
  • in alignment with His will and character
  • invoking His presence
  • identifying yourself as belonging to Him
Hello, My Brother, how are you all? We are well pheartprywpryw .

Yes, hello.

Is that true?
We'd like to think so. But... ???

Here on the ground, I don't get everything I ask for in Jesus' name.
And I don't mean selfish things. I mean for the benefit of others. (ministry)

We had a saying in a group I used to run with.
"If God only healed one person in a hundred that we pray for, would it still be worth it?"

Frankly, that's a terrible statistic. Failures should be rare.

Can you move mountains?
Of course not. Why should I or why would I even want to? You're taking a proverbial expression and trying to make it literal.

And do greater works than Jesus did?
What greater works do you think there are? What do you think Jesus means by "greater works"?

Does your "whole-Bible" view negate what these verses plainly say?
Of course not, but taking everything into account is the only way to get an accurate understanding of what Jesus was meaning in these verses.
