Jesus said “No man can come to me, except the Father that sent me draw him.” (John 6:44 ASV)
These words show something deep and serious. A person does not come to Christ by pride, pressure, or human thinking alone. It begins with God. The Father draws the heart. He brings light into a person’s darkness. He makes truth alive inside. Without this drawing, a person may hear about Jesus but never truly come to Him in life and heart.
But Jesus also speaks with strong truth about how people respond when God draws them.
He said “Ye will not come to me, that ye may have life.” (John 5:40 ASV)
This shows responsibility. It does not say they could not come. It says they would not come. So there is both God’s drawing and man’s response. God reaches out first, but the heart can still refuse.
Jesus also said “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.” (John 6:44 ASV)
And again “Every one that hath heard from the Father, and hath learned, cometh unto me.” (John 6:45 ASV)
So those who come are those who hear and respond to what God is doing inside them.
Jesus also showed that not everyone hears the same way.
He said “He that is of God heareth the words of God.” (John 8:47 ASV)
To hear in Jesus’ words means more than sound entering the ear. It means receiving, accepting, and letting truth take root.
This is why Jesus used parables.
He said “Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.” (Matthew 13:11 ASV)
Parables reveal what is inside the heart. The same message can produce very different results depending on the listener.
Jesus explained it like seed falling on ground.
Some hear, but do not understand:
“When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the evil one, and snatcheth away that which hath been sown in his heart.” (Matthew 13:19 ASV)
Some receive quickly, but have no depth:
“Yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while.” (Matthew 13:21 ASV)
Some hear, but life’s cares and desires grow stronger and choke the word:
“The care of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word.” (Matthew 13:22 ASV)
This is how deception often works in Jesus’ teaching. Not always by open rejection, but by truth being weakened, crowded out, or not allowed to grow deep.
But some receive and bear fruit:
“He that was sown upon the good ground, this is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; who verily beareth fruit.” (Matthew 13:23 ASV)
Jesus also gave strong warnings about being misled. He said “Take heed that no man lead you astray.” (Matthew 24:4 ASV)
And “Many false prophets shall arise, and shall lead many astray.” (Matthew 24:11 ASV)
And “Because iniquity shall be multiplied, the love of the many shall wax cold.” (Matthew 24:12 ASV)
Cold love does not happen in one moment. It grows slowly when truth is no longer guarded and lived.
Jesus also warned about outward religion without inward truth.
He said “This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.” (Matthew 15:8 ASV)
A person can still speak His name, still hear His words, and still be around truth, but the heart can drift away.
That is why Jesus connects love and obedience a word that many reject today.
He said “If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments.” (John 14:15 ASV)
And “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me.” (John 14:21 ASV)
And “If a man keep my word, he shall never see death.” (John 8:51 ASV)
Jesus is not speaking to burden people. He is showing what real relationship looks like. Love listens. Love follows. Love stays.
Jesus also shows that following Him is not a one-time moment, but a daily walk.
He said “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23 ASV)
And “He that endureth to the end, the same shall be saved.” (Matthew 24:13 ASV)
So the life of a disciple is continuing, not stopping early.
Jesus also warned about shallow response.
He said “Whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.” (Luke 14:33 ASV)
This shows that following Him is serious, not casual. it means putting Christ first.
But at the same time, Jesus shows mercy and power behind it all.
He said “Apart from me ye can do nothing.” (John 15:5 ASV)
So even obedience is not human pride. It is life connected to Him.
This is the full picture Jesus gives:
God draws the soul in mercy. Truth is spoken clearly. The heart receives or resists.
And what a person does with that word determines everything.
Not because salvation is earned like wages, but because the living voice of Christ is not meant to be heard and forgotten. It is meant to be received, followed, and kept.
That is why Jesus still calls today with both authority and love, saying “Come unto me.”

A seed went out in quiet ways,
from gentle hand of light,
no force, no noise, no heavy call,
just truth made soft and bright.
from gentle hand of light,
no force, no noise, no heavy call,
just truth made soft and bright.
It fell where hearts were open,
and where they were not yet,
the same word came in mercy,
not pushing, not upset.
and where they were not yet,
the same word came in mercy,
not pushing, not upset.
Some fell where ground was hardened,
too busy, cold, or still,
the word lay there for moments,
then lost its quiet will.
And what was meant to blossom,
was taken from the way,
like morning light on stone ground,
that cannot hold the day.
too busy, cold, or still,
the word lay there for moments,
then lost its quiet will.
And what was meant to blossom,
was taken from the way,
like morning light on stone ground,
that cannot hold the day.
Some fell on rocky places,
where joy rose up so fast,
but when the heat of trouble came,
that joy could not hold fast.
It loved the word at first sight,
but depth had not been grown,
so roots were still too shallow,
to stand when winds were blown.
where joy rose up so fast,
but when the heat of trouble came,
that joy could not hold fast.
It loved the word at first sight,
but depth had not been grown,
so roots were still too shallow,
to stand when winds were blown.
Some fell among the thistles,
where worries softly grew,
and cares of life and longing,
slowly pushed it too.
Not one great sudden turning,
but many little ties,
that gently turned the heart away,
while truth was still alive.
where worries softly grew,
and cares of life and longing,
slowly pushed it too.
Not one great sudden turning,
but many little ties,
that gently turned the heart away,
while truth was still alive.
But some fell into good ground,
where patient hearts were found,
they heard it and they kept it,
and fruit came safe and sound.
Not rushed, not proud, not noisy,
but steady, deep, and true,
a life that learns in quiet,
to live what it is due.
where patient hearts were found,
they heard it and they kept it,
and fruit came safe and sound.
Not rushed, not proud, not noisy,
but steady, deep, and true,
a life that learns in quiet,
to live what it is due.
So hear the voice that calls you,
so gentle, near, and clear,
not forcing, but inviting,
to draw your heart near.
so gentle, near, and clear,
not forcing, but inviting,
to draw your heart near.
Let nothing steal the moment,
no pride, no fear, no shame,
just let the word take root in you,
and grow in Jesus’ name.
no pride, no fear, no shame,
just let the word take root in you,
and grow in Jesus’ name.
For He does not compel the heart,
but waits with open hand,
and those who hear and follow Him,
will learn to understand.
but waits with open hand,
and those who hear and follow Him,
will learn to understand.
