2 John 1:1-3, walk in truth, don’t follow every new idea, because deception isn’t always obvious, it doesn’t come with a warning label, instead it looks good, it sounds good, it even feels right, but beneath the surface, it is leading people away from God. We live in a time where truth is no longer truth, where the world tells us that right and wrong are just personal opinions and love means accepting everything, even at the cost of compromising God’s word. But what happens when truth becomes flexible, when deception disguises itself as enlightenment, confusion takes over, false teachers rise and people are led astray without even realizing it, people twisting the gospel, distorting Jesus’ message, truth is not flexible, it is absolute. Love is not just emotion, it is obedience to God, deception will always look appealing, but it leads to destruction, because truth and love are inseparable.
The most dangerous messages in the church today don’t sound evil, they sound almost right, not outright lies, but phrases wrapped in light, dipped in scripture, sprinkled with sincerity, that’s how deception works. 2 Corinthians 11:14, Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light, because the most destructive doctrines today aren’t from angry atheists, they’re from well meaning believers quoting Jesus out of context. “God just wants me to be happy.” Or, “If I have enough faith, nothing bad will happen to me.” Yet, beneath these polished sayings, lies a terrifying truth, they sound holy, but these sayings promise the comfort of Christ, they offer resurrection without repentance. Polished sayings sell purpose, but not surrender and before you know it, the Jesus you’re following looks more like a life coach, than the lamb of God.
1 John 4:1, test the spirit behind what polished sayings are repeating, this isn’t paranoia, it’s protection, it’s the Holy Spirit whispering, know my voice, don’t fall for a counterfeit. Think about it, Eve didn’t fall for a lie that sounded absurd, she fell for a twisted truth, did God really say, that’s the oldest trick in the book. Question the word, bend the truth, sell rebellion wrapped in relevance and it’s still happening. Satan will get you to redefine Jesus slowly, softly, strategically, until Jesus is just a mascot for your feelings, don’t be lulled to sleep by a message that soothes. Jesus is a person, he doesn’t need a rebrand, many people believe that God’s highest calling is happiness, if it brings peace to me, it must be the will of God, but what if the peace you feel is simply the absence of challenge, the confirmation isn’t the confirmation people think it is.
Happiness is never the ultimate goal in scripture, holiness is, faithfulness is, obedience is and sometimes the road to those things is paved with pain, Luke 9:23, not take up their dreams, not take up their comfort, take up their cross. A cross meant suffering, a cross meant dying, a cross meant choosing a path that went against everything your flesh craved. Our souls are not healed through comfort, they’re refined through fire, comfort never changed anyone, but the cross, it changes everything. A different gospel, it tells you that your breakthrough is always around the corner, your best life is now and any discomfort must be an attack from the enemy, not a pruning from the father.
In today’s world, we are constantly told that love and truth can exist apart from each other, that love means accepting anything and everything and that truth is whatever we want it to be. 2 John 1:1 tells us something very different, John opens his letter, to the chosen lady and her children whom I love in the truth. Love is rooted in truth, you cannot separate the two and yet this is exactly what so many try to do. If you love me, you’ll support my choices, our culture has redefined love to mean unconditional approval and truth has become a shifting personal opinion, love without truth is deception and truth without love is cold and lifeless. Love is not about making people feel good in the moment, love tells the truth, even when it’s hard to hear and truth must always be delivered in love.
2 John 1:3, grace, mercy and peace are only possible when truth and love work together. John 8:11, the pharisees were holding tightly to the truth, but they had no love, they had no mercy, but Jesus didn’t ignore the truth, nor did he condemn her without love. Instead, Jesus exposed the hypocrisy of the accusers and he said to the woman, neither do I condemn you, go now and leave your life of sin. Truth, she had sinned, love, she was given was given grace and a new start, this is what it means to walk in truth and love. But here’s where many people go wrong, they either become so focused on defending truth, that they forget to love or they are so desperate to love, that they water down the truth.
Walking in truth means knowing what God’s word says and standing firm in it, we don’t bend to popular opinions, we don’t change scripture to fit modern culture, we don’t compromise just to be accepted. Walking in love means that even when we stand firm, we do so with grace, we don’t argue just to win debates, we don’t attack others with the Bible as a weapon, we don’t use truth as an excuse to be unkind. Psalm 23:1, is a declaration of identity, a spiritual legal document and it carries the authority to transform your life, when you know who your shepherd is, you stop fearing the valley. The LORD is my shepherd was not merely a title, it was a name, four letters, no vowels, so sacred, the Israelites refuse to speak it aloud. Four letters, no vowels, this is Yahweh, the covenant God, the eternal one, Exodus 3:14, no beginning, no ending, no rival, no equal.
Psalm 23:1, David is not saying some deity shepherds me, he is declaring something so shocking, so exclusive, so defiant, the God who created galaxies with words, he is my shepherd, this is legal covenant language. In the ancient near east, for someone to call a deity my shepherd meant something profound, it meant two things, first I submit to his rule, I am no longer self-guided, his voice becomes my direction and second, he assumes responsibility for my life, my provision, my protection, my future, they are no longer my burden. Enemies didn’t fear David because of his slingshot or his throne, they feared him because he was the only king on earth whose shepherd was the I AM. Psalm 23:1 doesn’t start with comfort, it starts with authority, Yahweh, the eternal God, the self-existent one, the King of heaven, my shepherd.
