And to answer your question directly, @Ziggy regeneration precedes faith. The natural man is dead in sin and trespass, and dead men can do nothing for themselves. Therefore, G-d must replace the heart of stone with a heart of flesh, a heart like David's, if you will, a heart after G-d.

Typology?
I consider typology necessary for Christology. But I reject spiritualization and spiritualism. Should be an interesting topic and subject matter. If I may, don't mistake typology for allegory (Song of Solomon); that's a common misunderstanding about typology. Both have their places, but they are layers. It's important to exegete first before applying overlayers.

Platonism conflicts with the Gospel. Remember the first Christian heresy in Scripture, that Christ was a Spirit? The Gospel teaches a real man in a regular human body walked on water, died, was raised by God to life in a glorified body and physically ascended into heaven. It teaches a soulful experience - as well as spiritual. It’s not all types and shadows.
