I believe the best way to understand God's grace is to let Scripture interpret Scripture. Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV) tells us that we are saved by grace through faith, not by our own works, so that no man can boast. To me, grace is more than God simply overlooking our sins. It is His undeserved favor toward us through Jesus Christ, offering forgiveness and salvation that we could never earn ourselves. That grace should lead us toward repentance, gratitude, and a desire to live according to God's will—not give us an excuse to continue in sin.

Titus 2:11–12 (KJV) says that the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, “Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world.”

So I believe the important question is not whether we can earn God's grace through our works, but whether we truly understand the grace He has given us through Christ. We are not saved because we are good enough; we seek to live righteously because of what God has done for us.

I welcome correction if I have misunderstood any of these Scriptures. My desire is to understand God's Word in its proper context, not simply defend my own opinion.

Most of Deuteronomy is set up as blessings and curses. The core of Moses' covenant is performance, and consequences. The blessings were set before them, contingent on their behavior. They mostly did not obtain the blessings. The curses were also set before them, again contingent on their behavior. Those curses fell on them early and often, and Moses predicted that would be the case.

So yes, Moses mediated a covenant whose purpose was largely to punish Israel when they were wicked... and that's justice served.
