This thread is for any verses you feel have seriously been twisted and used as weapons. One I would like to contribute is:
Proverbs 21:9
[9] It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
Twice in Proverbs, these exact words are spoken. (Proverbs 25:24) I'm confident God doesn't and never meant; an individual woman with her nagging. It is better to be on the rooftop than inside the house.
First: "corner"
Leviticus 19:9-10
[9] And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. [10] And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger: I am the Lord your God.
There are other verses; I won't post them all, but "corner" is significant.
Isaiah 11:12
[12] And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.
Grass on housetops: Psalm 129:6
[6] Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:
Does grass grow on rooftops? Had to look this one up.
Psalm 129:6 Commentaries: Let them be like grass upon the housetops, Which withers before it grows up;
Matthew 10:26-28
[26] Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. [27] What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. [28] And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Now Peter:
Acts 10:9-14
[9] On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: [10] And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, [11] And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: [12] Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. [13] And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. [14] But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.
Acts 10:15
[15] And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.
A Wide house:
Jeremiah 22:13-17
[13] Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work; [14] That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion. [15] Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him? [16] He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord . [17] But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it .
Proverbs 21:9
[9] It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman in a wide house.
It is better to dwell in a corner of the housetop with "the poor" and "the stranger", then in a WIDE house (a WIDE house of "unrighteousness", "chambers of wrong", "covetousness", "innocent blood", "oppression", and "violence").
Luke 6:20
[20] And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.
James 1:27
[27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.
Don't reduce Proverds 21:9 to a sexist comment made by the Father, when it never was meant as one. The wide house is the harlot. Jezebel. (Proverbs 7:1-27). It is better to be with the Father-less and widows.
Luke 12:43-44
[43] Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. [44] Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.
